Yea it is a bit of a debacle all round, especially all the whinging the CD Management did about focusing on local players rather than imports
His last FC game will start tomorrow at Eden Park Outer Oval, and looking at the weather he will be lucky if he get one innings in.

All the best to How, he has been a fine servant of the game. I think I first saw him playing in the domestic 50 over final in 2004 where CD got a massive score. He looked pretty composed, good off the back foot and driving through the covers in getting 90. I wasn't surprised he was called up to the international team the following season.

After that unbeaten 139 against England in 2008 I thought he would be a regular fixture in the team, but he got overtaken with the arrival of Guptill along with McCullum and Ryder at the top of the order. He was an excellent fielder. I recall one of the All White players who played with How at youth level said he felt How could have been an excellent football player.

Yeah, back in 2008, I would have put any money down that How would be NZ's mainstay test opener and top order ODI batsman for the next 7-8 years. Not only that amazing 139 against England in the ODI, but also his Test batting against England both home & away when we were in that re-building phase.

I'll also remember his 'solo' efforts when CD made the Champions League & how he looked a class above every other CD batsman.

At his best, a superb stroke-player.

Good luck to Jamie How in retirement. I thought he'd play a lot more international cricket for us with the form he showed in the ODI series in SA in 07 through to the England tour in 08 but it wasn't to be.

Always liked Jamie How, even when his chances were frustratingly unfulfilled. One of 'those' players.

Next FC round on today though rain interfering except in Auckland, where CD are 109/8. Heh. Long past the days when Skippy-powered CD were the best batting side in the country.

Even when Elliott's not around, that flaky ND batting finds a way to struggle with other gentle swing bowlers. Stupid agribusinessmen. Watling and Sodhi to save my money pls.

Is Bevan Small injured again?

Quinn is taking an uncomfortable number of wickets for a guy who was straight up and down at 125 clicks a year or so ago. I'm keen to see what he's sending down these days when they upload the footage.

Injury sidelines Small | Stuff.co.nz

Small had a portion of a rib removed to try and fix the problem in his side last season, but it is "still a little bit niggly".

He said it had gone a little further around his back now which was concerning. He was getting it checked this week.

"When you can't bowl at 100 per cent, you're putting the ball in areas to go for the least amount of runs. That's no way to play cricket.

"It's bloody frustrating when you're injured and can't do anything else. You can't run in at 100 per cent.

"You do the best you can and hope for the best result."

Small bowled his full allotment of overs in only one of the Twenty20 games and didn't get much of a chance with the bat.

He showed what he can do when he smashed a double century in club cricket for Freyberg last weekend.

The 22-year-old will play as a batsman for Manawatu in their Hawke Cup game against Hawke's Bay this weekend and said he was "a little way off" bowling again.

He will play for the CD A team when they have two one-day games in Palmerston North next week and will try to bowl 10 overs.

If he comes through he'll join the CD team for the start of the domestic one-day competition on December 27

Jamie How trading cricket for family | Stuff.co.nz

How and fellow former captain, Kieran Noema-Barnett, were controversially dropped from the CD Twenty20 side two weeks ago , but that hadn't influenced How's decision.

"This process had started long before that to be honest," How said. "It's funny how timing works out.

"It's purely coincidence."

The pair have taken the dropping hard, but How didn't want to dwell on it.

"No-one likes being dropped; there's something wrong if you did. The focus is on the retirement and the opportunity with Toyota."

God I love KNB and his fearsome 100kph wicket taking deliveries.

Would open the bowling for Bangladesh, and would be a good 5th bowler in tests.

I don't understand why Rob Nicol isn't opening or at #3 for Auckland. Raval-Nicol-Cachopa-O'Donnell-Munro-Grobbelaar looks tidier imo.

Met Service to save my "money" please. I went for draw-draw-draw based on the weather forecast, didn't account for Auckland and Hamilton humidity which appears to have turned today into a swingfest.

Power Papps holding firm so far. You'd have to think that if he can make a score on a greentop against Southee and Boult, then that'd count for a lot in terms of a callup for the SRL series.
