Congratulations to the NZ fans too for this win and for sticking it out with their team during thick and thin

While the circumstances in which it was achieved are obviously tragic, this still rates as New Zealand's greatest achievement in test cricket in the last 20 years for me. Better than the rain-blighted 0-0 draw v Oz in 2001, and better than 2-1 win against England in 1999. Only the 1993 1-1 draw v Australia can match this in my cricket watching life time. A magnificent comeback from New Zealand, both in this test and the series, and a tribute to all the players involved.

yeah that's not happening. Mathews is the only SL batsman who'll get runs. It's going to be a thrashing.

*sorry, allow me a bit of braggadocio after this win.*
Careful, that's a day 2 Hagley wicket apparently -

So NZ only gain 1 point on the rankings for an away test win & series draw against an opponent above them?

Also so thrilled for Vettori. It was a terrible shame that after spending roughly 5 years as the best player in a losing side, that he was forced out of cricket just before things started to turn around. It's fantastic for him that he got to have the feeling of playing in a winning test team one last time.

Yeah it's complete bollocks, especially given the calibre of teams that have been womped in the UAE in recent years. Still, if we beat Sri Lanka at home then our ranking score will fly up pretty quickly.

Funniest thing is India ought to be 7 under NZ, I still can't work out where Pakistan and England belong

It's very difficult to say where any team should be ranked. Everyone except South Africa is awful in conditions traditionally alien to their players. I don't see how India can be ranked conclusively behind Pakistan at all. South Africa are number 1, Australia number 2, but after that you could put England, Pakistan, India, New Zealand in virtually any order.

I think NZ have emerged as a pretty obvious number 3, while Sri Lanka probably ought to be 4, although the loss to SA at home leaves that under a bit of a cloud. I can't rate Pakistan because the team seems a different one from that which toured SL, England seemed awful when SL toured but appeared invigorated and back in pretty good form by the end of the summer and India have had no luck touring but haven't had a proper opponent to play at home since Australia but they've been quiet ordinary for mine.
