Chappell's no snake, tbh, he's just very socially awkward. I have little doubt his primary motives for going after Sachin is because he thought he could leverage a good relationship to clear the team of dead wood*. Needless to say, he clearly calculated wrongly and probably didn't fully understand team and cultural dynamics at play, etc. An affliction suffered by ever Chappell ever because they can usually just bulldoze their way to the team they want in Australia. They're not sneaky or devious, just authoritarian arseholes who are very used to getting their own way. Probably had to think about that 'together we could rule the world!' line a lot more than he'd like to admit.

*dead wood typically defined by the Chappells as either too old, not an uber gun or, worse, both. Basically if you didn't cruise you way into the Test side on the sheer overpowering odour of pure, oozing talent before your 20th birthday, you should just quit and take up coaching. Have no time for people who might have to *gasp* work for it or *horror* late developers. Was key to letting Harris go to QLD, reputedly (he and Nobes anyway).

They're all ganging up on Chappell here aren't they? Makes one forget he's one of Australia's greatest, some would say arguably better than Tendulkar even, and not some hack out to make a quick buck. Truth could be he just proved to be a very difficult person to deal with for India's demigods.

In other, words, not the right man for the job.

And also an unsuccessful coach in every role he's ever had.

I bet if he coached under 10s they'd force him out, because he would have wanted to bring in younger talent.

Haha indeed. He just made a massive miscalculation. He got rid of Ganguly and thought he had proved it could be rule the roost, but he had no idea.

@plalor @malcolmconn anybody trying to get Greg Chappell's response to Tendulkar's allegations?

Malcolm Conn ‏@malcolmconn
@riad2076 @plalor just tweeted Greg Chappell's response. Says meeting claimed by #Tendulkar over captaincy never took place. #cricket

Liam Pickering ‏@lennyp23
@malcolmconn @plalor I know which version I'm believing! A bloke trying to flog a book with controversy or GC ? #nobrainer! #BankGCversion

Well there it is Sachin haters. You've got Liam Pickering the flog on your side.

That comment to VVS - "you should be careful, because making a comeback at the age of 32 might not be easy" - is astonishing though, unless that too is embellishment.

I don't think GC got the hang of Indian culture at all. When it could have been as easy as having a few dinners with Steve Waugh sometime.

I'm not sure whether it's just myself growing up and becoming more worldly or myself being in a particularly worldly field now, but a lack of cultural understanding seems a reasonable excuse 7 years ago but totally unacceptable today.

Of course, being coach of the Indian cricket team should come with some expectation of cultural sensitivity so a lack of appreciation or tact is pretty poor from anyone in that position at any time.

Ah well, when all the he said / she said is done, Chappell is still the greatest test #4 of all time.

Apart from maybe Graham Pollock.

1. Obviously he was doing it carefully, i.e. removing the grass/dirt.
2. My thumb bends even without using much force.
3. Some force has to be used if the grass is really stuck inside the seam.

It was a careless mistake; that's all it was. Like Daemon said, this is one of the things you'd do on a long day without thinking twice.
And afridi was just using the stitching as dental floss

Wow.. Not too many Tendulkar fans on this forum. But i don't see what incentive Tendulkar has to lie in the Chappell case. I can see why he would lie to protect Harbhajan and to get around the ball tampering allegations but this doesn't make too much sense. And also I find it difficult to care about the brouhaha over ball tampering.. Two of my absolute favourite bowlers, Waqar and Wasim, would not have been able to work their magic without lifting the seam a bit or placing a few strategic scratches here and there. Is it against the law? Yes. But I find bending of the laws kinda sorta acceptable when you are trying to gain an advantage. And just for the record I do believe that both Dravid and Tendulkar were guilty of ball tampering.
