***Official*** New Zealand in the West Indies 2014

Nice to get a win on the board. I suspect the West Indies will hit back hard in the next Test though. They showed enough verve in the 3rd innings to suggest they can put in much better bowling performances than their first innings effort which was surely hampered by players short of match practice. Only change I'd make is to bring in Brathwaite and perhaps Holder depending on the pitch served up.

@ NZT: It's got to be pretty gutting for Beamer, WW and kyear. Getting dicked away from home is one thing (and happens to everyone atm), but a heavy loss first up on home soil with what is close to the most favoured West Indian team would be something else, and we used to be pretty used to being in that position.

I think the West Indies will bounce back though. Jerome Taylor is bowling beautifully and Roach is getting better. Soon the bowling is going to click in the first innings. They just need to clip their batsmen round the ears. Powell, Edwards, Bravo and Samuels were dead weight in this test.

I think they will be much better.

1. Brathwaite should come in for Powell
2. Someone (possibly Deonarine) could come in for Samuels.
3. Which would allow for them to drop one of the spinners (probably Shillingford) for Holder.

I know this won't be popular with the WI supporters, but, IMO, the Windies really missed Sammy in this test. His bowling and batting would have added a lot of backbone.

Deonarine has been pretty poor in test cricket Hendrix. I don't think they should go back to him.

Brathwaite I'm not sure on. I didn't think much when I saw him down here but he's scored heavily in domestic cricket which isn't easy for batsmen over there.

If they're going to bring someone in from outside the squad, it might as well be someone like Jermaine Blackwood. He's got a good first-class record, and if he's half as talented as the West Indian posters on here say, he's worth a go.

Yeah...but I think we'll be much better too. McCullum will be better for having a game under his belt, and the team will have taken a ton of confidence out of such a dominant display - especially given we've traditionally been carp in series openers.

I wouldn't say we've been carp. In fact, I'd say this is neither the time nor plaice for such feedback.
?

Our last 6 tour away series openers

Draw v Bangladesh were we were might have been at risk of defeat were it not for rain
160 run loss to England
Skittled for 40 by South Africa
Rolled for 100 by Sri Lanka
Pole-axed by an innings and a bazillion by India
Hammered by 9 wickets by none other than the West Indies

I think carp is a fair way to describe things, which makes this performance all the more impressive.

You'd hope Sodhi's time as #1 Spinner came crashing to an end with how well Craig bowled and the wickets Craig took versus the gifts that Sodhi took.

Southee must hate havnig Sodhi in the side, he's so rarely given a crack at the tail end because they're "Ok Sodhi, here is some confidence gaining wickets for you" fodder.
