Thunk the term is really overused but that really was a captain's knock. Brilliant stuff. Why the **** are all Australian captains so tough?

Man, that Hughes ton never gets old. Wasn't even the most dramatic thing to happen in that day's play either.

great stuff by clarkeh going on with it. great stuff bouncing back from last innings with the bat, the highlights of smithy were top shelf, and still with watson to come - with a license, have an opportunity to bury sa here.

That's gotta be up there amongst Clarke's best innings already, even if it doesn't look it on the scoresheet

In some ways yes but in some ways no. You'd think he's played more on tougher pitches. Basically he came in after Warner had already deflated the bowlers, the pitch was pancake flat and the opposition's best bowler was about to go down for the count. He bravely survived Morkel's spell but that was more designed to rough him up and then get him out. As the commentators said, he barely bowled him a full ball. He spent most of the last session milking the part-timers. Think the blows on the body aside there will be times when he has to bat on a pitch which is actually giving something to the bowlers. His nemesis is the moving ball and it's hard to remember any which moved all day. The main thing for him was coming out of a run slump. That's not to say that it's not an excellent innings but none of the batsmen looked troubled on the pitch which was arguably one of the most benign one has seen on a first day in some time.

All the kudos though has to go to Warner. Atm he's our most important batsman. Not only is he scoring regularly but he's making it so much easier for his middle-order batsmen having knocked the bowlers off their line.

Almost impossible to see Australia lose from here. It's just about whether or not the win can be forced.

Kim Hughes also did this

One of the best days of test cricket ever. Super knock. Being christened Kimberley would have toughened Hughes up from a young age. He was tough enough (not too many guys with balls big enough to charge Garner), just the pressure got him in the end. Deserves to be remembered for more than some tears at the end of a very rough trot.

Fair to say Steyn has a weakness against left handers? even if there was any swing available, his seam position coming over the wicket to the left handers was Ishant-level bad. He was never going to get any movement with it all scrambled like that.

Philander didn't get much movement either, but I tend to think of him as more of a seam bowler.

I trust we are all really looking forward to the resumption tonight and the sheer beauty of watching Duminy and Elgar bowl a lot of overs, because spinners.

I quite like watching Duminy bowl actually.

It's a straw man though. It'd be like someone taking the piss out of your point by saying they were looking forward to see Angelo Mathews bowl tomorrow on a dustbowl because seamers.
