You're not in his head mate, give it a spell.

Anyway, fair enough for those bowling at 130km, but Southee/Mitch won't be and they'll be a lot harder to pull in front of square on a decent deck. Given we've played on those dimensions a fair bit over the past 18 months and India haven't at all, I'm picking we'll have a fair advantage in terms of bowling the right lines and lengths.

Although i don't think he should be turfed just yet, I totally saw where Blocky was coming from regarding Guptill the other night. Strong shots going straight to the fielders, no strike rotation. It was some shocking cricket from Guppy for most of the innings. That six he hit was so sweet though.

Yeah, but Virat Kohli bowling you a half tracker at 100KPH.... I'd put money on Chris Martin being able to do something with that ball too.

Yeah, but even Mitch and Southee with additional pace are going to the option too much and getting it absolutely wrong, look at how many balls they hit through fine leg off the bouncer. It's just too hard to defend against, as a surprise weapon and something you use against a guy like Raina, absolutely, bowl it. But as a standard option three to four times an over? No team, not even one with Kohli, should be able to chase 240 from 30 out on a slow wearing wicket with three wickets down.

As for Guptill, doesn't take a brain surgeon to realise he has problems there.

A good win for NZ last night. Still you can't help but feel India is always in the game when Dhoni and Kohli are still batting.

Ok, let's not go crazy. I've seen Chris Martin get bowled by a straight half volley from Paul Collingwood.

No, that's not the realm of a brain surgeon at all. It takes a clinical psychologist. He's struggling mentally, no doubt. But that does not necessarily cross into any sort of territory you're speaking of. Depression is an illness that does not discriminate against guys in a rich vein of form or on a string of ducks. He could well score 100 on Sunday and be on top of the world - that's not depression, which is also where the media got it so wrong with the Trott situation. In Gup's case, it's entirely possible he can be low on confidence without describing it being anything more troublesome. But again, you nor I are fit to make any diagnoses.

Mitch found joy v the Windies pitching it up and swinging it at Eden Park, so he may well do the same.

Don't most professional cricket teams these days have their own psychologist in-house, or is that just the richer teams like England?

Yeah, NZ have definitely had a psychologist in the past (it was Gary Hermansson for a while, I think), so I'd imagine they still do.

Another thing i forgot to mention, how good were McCullums field placements. He only had 2 fielders out on the boundary for the first 10 overs (fine leg and third man), meaning he had another man stopping the singles, with Williamson and Guptill at point/cover which is a big factor in why India were unable to get away at the start
baz is an above average odi captain and a below average test match captain. His decision to keep faith in corey was excellent. Captaincy made a major impact on the game last night.

I don't know about that really. He's certainly not as good as he is in one dayers but I think "below average" is harsh. Which five current Test captains do you think are better than him?

My opinion of McCullum's test captaincy oscillates wildly. He's one of those guys who "trusts his hunches", even when those hunches are pretty ****ing stupid. Also his tendancy to gift his wicket often casts a negative light on his captaincy, even though it probably shouldn't. At the same time, he's generally been sensible with rotating through his bowlers and I like the fact that he backs them to take wickets by setting attacking fields.

I have to pop out to cricket practice right now PEWS - so I will have to limit my answer to saying I am not rating him against the current test match captains in the world as I don't see enough of Pakistan, SL etc. and I would even like to see more of Sammy before passing judgement on him.

I am just rating him out of all test match captains I have observed closely in my life either playing for NZ or overseas teams and I have never seen anyone worse than him. He is definitely the worst NZ test captain I have seen out of
Fleming, Howarth, Coney, Wright, and Jeff Crowe.

I have left Ross off the list because although I rate Ross as a decent skip some of the NZ posters are convinced he was a bad skip and I don't really feel like stirring the pot over something that we buried as a discussion topic 12 months ago.
