Sledging or an excuse to get personal?

Just love sledging. Well researched, sharp sledges usually gets even the best. Perhaps it;s down to your upbringing. I was an ultra-aggressive, person who did not take sports seriously, so I did play the fool often. Played rugby and was considered one of the roughest in the school in the style of play. Sledging in rugby is much serious than in cricket, and I was one of the worst in rugby as well!

From the "undisputable" urban dictionary

1. Sledging
Sledging or "Mental Disintergration" as it is also known is the tactic of talking to players on the opposition side (particularily batsmen, as taking on a whole team in the field is never a good idea) with the objective of destroying either their concentration or their confidence/self esteem. Sledging is practised in a large way by the Australian Cricket Team, but most International teams partake in sledging. Sledging can be merely an opposition player talking constantly to the batsman, but has mostly become known as players swearing and questioning their lineage.

If the behavior was "foolish" then would have got without much problems. Coaches and colleagues knew that behavior was intentional and is to wind up others. Unfortunately, now I am in the wrong field to do such things.

Sledging, IMO should be personal and should target lapses or problems in a person. It might sound cruel, but, that's how it works. One of my opponet's girlfriend has given up on him suddenly and married a pilot. I was making sound and gesture of a air plane landing whenever I ran passed him.

M sure that guy would have tried to land a few punches on your face:). On a serious note, this is one of the most cruel sledges I have heard of.

Truth is, the long format of cricket involves a lot of time stood around waiting. And most blokes are going to fill that time up with something they think will help them win, whether its shining the ball, or abusing the batters. You have more time on your hands in cricket, which leads to more chatter.

So long as it stays on the pitch and doesn't get racist or too personal I don't care. Its part of the challenge batters have to face.

Ok, I would never go that far, unless I genuinely hated the fella. Pretty harsh

But the most important thing IMO is to forget everything off the field. That airplane fella still is a good friend of mine. We used to have a drink together before the current job took away my free time. It's important not to drag the sledges across matches too, then it becomes too antagonizing. You have to come up with something new and unexpected by the opponent when you see him next time around! I was target of sledging for being fat, lousy and being a book worm. I was sledged about the girlfriend I lost due to dengue fever. I took them right on my chin, performed when needed, and payed it with interest when due to the ones who dished it out.

If you can't take it, don't dish it. As my personal experience, the guys who are being sledged are ones who are big mouthed and try to sledge others. The silent guys go un noticed. No one wants to wind them up and at receiving end.

If you want to get personal then that's your right. Just don't be surprised if some people aren't quite as forgiving off the field as you say you are, that's their right too.

Absolutely correct. It just reflects the poor temperament of individuals who have no control over themselves and can not take the pressure of the game.
Not necessarily so. I often sledge bowlers when I'm batting to help me concentrate harder. Nothing personal, it's mainly because these days I umpire Burgeinho's games Saturday morning then go straight to my games to open the batting, and I'm often a bit tired so I need a pick-me-up to get me going.

They're generally too stupid to know that's why I do it, and it had the added bonus of making them bowl short when they get angry.

As I said, it's nothing personal directed at them. I just tell them if I hit them for four not to bowl there, or that my grandmother is faster than them.

I don't see a problem with it. I get called an old **** all the time when I bat. Which is true, but not very nice on their part. Tbh though, if a bloke chirps at you about the way you're batting or bowling, it really shouldn't get to you. If they have a crack at something personal it can easily go OTT though.

I think this is how exactly it should be. But unfortunately that is not what we see from quite a few players. On the name of sledging, people are just crossing the line most of the times.

Think we saw both sides of it today.

Steyn's sledge to Rohit was brilliant. It was smart, funny, had truth to it, but wasn't anything personal... Just him pointing out how little Rohit had achieved compared to him.

Rohit telling Steyn to come to India was ridiculously silly, but still fun. Steyn will rip us apart there too and Rohit will then have nowhere to hide

Philander's send off of Rahane was piss poor and I think it's just ****ty behaviour. Once you've got the batsman out, an unprovoked sledge is extremely silly , especially after he's played a great innings.

I'm wondering if MJ will continue in the South Africa series sledging the Saffers? Then again most of them are used to it and are just as bad themselves.

Yep. For the record, I'd have none of it outlawed, as even when Philander did that ****ty send-off I think its part of the game and if ****heads wanna be ****heads then fine.

However, I remember Shoaib or someone getting fined for pointing Hayden back to the pavilion after he got him out. Is there a rule that bowlers can't send-off batsmen?

Ah yeah that might be it.

Are you allowed to blow them a kiss goodbye but not point to the pavilion?
