Judging purely by the first session, there are about twenty bowlers in the world better than Philander.

There aren't though. Like Jono I would take Philander but not by much with both at full fitness; Philander by a distance when factoring in that he's going to available a lot more often.

Don't judge by one session. In fact don't even judge until they play on the same pitches next year. That's when it'll be more clear.

I'd take Philander. Close though.
I'm not judging him on one session, just asking for opinions.

Get this ****. The Oliver Cromwell of Vernon Philander.

Dale Steyn bowling around the wicket already, this is a big tick for the Indian batsmen so far.

I think the problem is when he has to come in earlier. Dhoni coming in after 45 overs would be great. He can play some of the dirty village cricket shots Prior and Haddin notoriously play.
Dhoni coming in after 45 overs is great in ODIs yes, but this is Test Cricket.

Short stuff wont work aganst pujara. Guy has ridiculous patience.
Definite victory here for India that Steyn's abandoned his natural attacking length in favor of just bowling short
