Yeah Johnson's bowling was ****ing intense. As I've said before, bowling dry isn't the only way to bowl well on AO. He got a bit luck with the Cook wicket but even if it didn't move, the line and pace would have made it tough to play. Got zip out of a lifeless deck, this without hitting the seam even once. Johnson's bowling some serious balls right now and long may it continue. So good.

Yeah the thing I like about Johnson's bowling at the moment is that it's the sustainable type of Johnson good; the sort of bowling he produced when he was actually a consistently good contributor to the attack for a year or two. It's not the near-mythical "match-winning" Johnson who bends the ball back in to right handers in the air, or the wild Johnson who is only effective on the Perth wicket. He's just bowling fast, hostile stuff with reasonable control and occasionally getting some of that natural Kasprowicz-like undercutting tail away from the RHB; that's what he's good at.

He's not trying to swing the ball get traditional seam movement; he's just playing to his strengths and it's the sort of bowling he's capable of sustaining. I'd be much less optimistic about it if these were just the two matches out of every 30 that he swung the ball in the air or he'd just got a pitch with some crazy bounce but as I said before he was picked, as much as I doubted his mental state going into another Ashes contest and definitely wouldn't have picked him for that reason, it was nice to him talked up as someone in good rhythm, bowling really quickly etc and not "Johnson's swinging the ball!!!!11!"

This is what is used to be like following an away ashes series. I had rather forgotten.
Yeah. Reminds me of getting up and wondering what might be the worst case scenario and regularly hearing how our brave lads have gone beyond it. Turning on TMS to hear commentary about Carberry facing had me briefly thinking how well he'd done to still be batting. Then I realised it was the first over of our innings. 130ao at Brisbane was similar. I knew our batting is dire, but you kind of think they'd reach 200 on a blameless pitch. All very depressing.

The only consolation is the bitterness in some sections of the Aus support. I honestly had no idea how offensive the sprinkler was 3 years ago. Or maybe it was our temerity to actually win a couple of series. tbh there's little sign of that sort of attitude on CW, where our Aus posters are almost to a man being extraordinarily civilised about the whole thing.

Norwood's on Fire
If we collapse tonight then I'll despair; I'm confident that we can put a decent score on the board though. Need KP to fire.

Lyon's six was hilarious. It was like he'd been watching Haddin, Harris, etc and was nodding like "Yes... yes..." Then got his opportunity and copied them exactly. Best.

Also Stokes' bowling reminded me of a young Watto.

Thinking about it I think we've allowed ourselves to be conned a bit here. You get all this bollocks about the Ashes was getting so one-sided that it needed Australia to become more competitive and on so we're told that Haddin and Johnson are gone, and that Clarke's back is ****ed - so we buy into all of that and then find its simply not true - I mean if we'd known the truth we could have picked a full strength team

Gotta be honest, I think we're done

Very worrying times for England at the moment - we look like we're coming out the other side of a purple patch that's lasted 4 years or so. Trott is a gigantic hole in the team, Swann isn't as effective as he once was and Anderson is looking like he's on the slide too

Well, a real need for character, fight, and some positivity on day three. Thought Carbs and Root toughed it out pretty well at the end of the day and batted in the necessary way to get through to the close, would like to see a different message sent out at the start of day three. More intent and some impetus to put at least a bit of pressure back on the Aussie attack who at this moment look fool of threat and menace.

Probs a massive overreaction, but I'm wondering if this is the series where Broad takes over from Jimmy as our premier bowler. Stu hasn't just looked a lot more penetrative this series, he's also taken the wickets. The difference between Jimmy of this series and Jimmy of three years ago is just a matter of a bit of nip - not sure his control is any worse, but when he isn't extracting swing he needs that nip to be a wicket taking threat. But then he's only 31 so I'm probs overreacting.

confirmed: no afl players made the cut for the ad, owing to their lack of status, presumably as they have never represented australia

the only other person of note (non cricketer) in the ad is jesinta campbell (below)
