2. The field set to Rutherford. An enterprising captain would have both 2 gullies and backward point as well as a short cover or two.

Rutherford appears to be more assured off his pads, but a pull and/or hook shot could really add 10 runs to his average. At the moment you can bowl to his weakness safe in the knowledge he can't hurt you. Fortunately bowling at his weakness takes a lot of energy out of the bowler so they can't do it forever.

Sounds like the West Indies are bowling much much too short on a Dunedin green pitch. Shades of 1980?

The age old inexperienced fast bowler trap. Pitch looks bouncy and a bit green so they bowl too short and let the batsmen off the hook (or on the hook if it's short enough).

Just bowl a good line and length and let the pitch do the work.

Yeah, it's not the worst weakness to have and I like how he deals with it - just let the ****ers hit you and don't worry about it. I hope he's working on a pull too.

Best in the 138-143 km/h range, Gabriel a bit slower. Field to Rutherford is fairly conventional, though they have a short leg and a short-ish midwicket.

Bowling at his weakness also wastes the new ball, which given that they're bowling with a kookaburra is a serious trade-off. England learnt that lesson during the NZ leg of the home-away series and pitched it up during the England tests.

thanks. I think they're missing a trick there and would be better off going for the Fleming vs Martyn strength-is-a-weakness method.

When someone's poor in a particular area it means they hit fewer shots there, not more.

So predictable. Gabriel showing no rhythm whatsoever. He's not even bowling quick. Cotterell would have been a better option. We'll be relying on Shillingford. AGAIN.

The pitch is pretty flat but there is some swing if you get the seam position right.

While Sammy has caught the edge as I type, bloody hell he looks a lot more gentle than I remember. It's not even a pace thing either - someone who is 2m tall should be generating some serious bounce but he isn't even doing that. And he's another with the scrambled seam bowling.

If you have big bounce you can be just as effective as any 140kph bowler, but he isn't doing anything. Upright seam, bang it in.

Great start. It really helps us that our second tier batsmen are able to score runs at home, even if they cannot score overseas to save themselves. We could be very difficult to beat at home in years to come.

Really pleased to see Rutherford get a start - I'm still excited by his talent even if he's been poor since his second test. Will likely need some time out of the side at some point but that can wait another year+.

Ah okay. I didn't see the toss but this just looks like a typical first day pitch in NZ. Anyway, the openers have batted nicely so far so they are probably making conditions look slightly easier than what they actual are.

Will be a great test of Southee and Boult. Will be interested to see if they can be penetrative on these types of wickets where they have traditionally struggled.
