They took Devcich and Daryl Mitchell on the last A tour and made Cachopa open rather than picking Raval. Devcich was batting 3. Sodhi leapfrogged Astle into the test team despite poor returns.

Somehow I don't have any faith that they're going to have any type of consistency in the process now that Mr Pie Chart has left.

The tour squad was a muddle, no argument, but only really in the areas of zero openers and zero LO spinners.

But Devcich performed at A level, and has been elevated, as has Anderson. Broom didn't perform at A level and has been elevated, but he did perform in Champions League in the format he has now been selected for. So only really Sodhi doesn't meet my stepping stone theory IMO, and he level pegged Astle, but IMO Astle should have had more money in bank. But I'm ok with it now.

So I reckon Bracewell should look at A level as next step, as will selectors. The next one should be better selected, some chaff already sorted.

While Cachopa and Latham actually have decent 'A' records, and therefore will deservedly be up the pecking order.

Immenso was questioning me on it. So I felt compelled to re-post/recycle

And all good, I've got to say its beyond my technical abilities to assess, but I find it interesting.

Decision making, early innings plays/leaves is about the best I can I can assess watching on the vault via my phone.

Soper doesnt look that slow? Seems nippy enough. Plus he has the mullet and beard combo, which makes him at least 5km quicker.

Yeah I was wrong to lump Soper in with Bradley Scott as a FC selection with absolutely zero upside a while back. I'd assumed any shape back down a right-hander's lbw line was impossible, but apparently not.

It's top-order left-handers who are really hating his emergence on the scene especially though. The vault says he's 9/145 vs. LHBs since his debut, all nine before the 20th over. Cutting them in half and challenging their stumps with movement in, taking the odd one away from them as well.

tbf even if he does become the next Scott, that's 200 wickets at a cheap price and no chance of an NZ call up. Otago would love it.

Soper has a freakish ability to bowl absolute gems to quality batsmen. It's really what got him noticed in the first place. He can be erratic at times but will then bowl something unplayable/wicket taking. He can also move it both ways and rarely gets injured. Is definitely quicker than Scott too.

Interestingly both Latham and Bracewell are former age group keepers who have moved up the order.

And Craig Cachopa was the number 1 keeper and captain in that 2010 NZ U19 side with Latham number 3, interestingly he was picked as captain over Bracewell who is a year older and played in previous U19 WC and Latham
It is interesting to watch in terms of development who actually makes the biggest impact at international level, (Yes I think all of them will play international cricket for NZ). Given that they all have vastly different development process
Latham (Born April 92 – FC Debut Nov 2010)- Picked younger and earlier than the other 3 in all forms of the game and moved around a lot (FC Avg 36)
Bracewell (Born Feb 91 – FC Debut Feb 2011)- Played pretty much solely at the top of the order (the hardest place to bat in NZ) and battled for form initially, finally starting to perform, though selected for NZA in 2012 and rejected*. (FC AVG 36)
Cachopa (Born Jan 92 – FC Debut Feb 2012)- Started latter and batting deep in order and had very good start to his career, moving up the order slowly. Has a little bit of second season syndrome will be interesting to see if he gets the gloves if Hopkins ever retires, does not seam to have been considered for higher honours yet. (FC AVG 46)

I watched Bracewell's boundaries. Can definitely see the wrist snap thing Hurricane is talking about, in particular one off drive off Astle is all wrist.

I'm not saying its a bad thing though.

Hurricane said he thought it limits his power...don't really care about that tbh as long as he has the timing to get runs. Chanderpaul's technique basically makes it impossible for him to hit hard down the ground, but he's also very hard to dislodge.

Bennett must've spent some time working on his batting during his injury layoff, he was almost Chris Martin bad in his first incarnation.

Good to see Wagner keeping up his usual domestic bullying.

will need to see the plays and misses etc, but he looked to be playing Bennett well.

So Canterbury's 9,10,11 have contributed 175 runs this match; you'd usually be happy but not when that's more than 40% of your team's total.

Otago look a very good side and will benefit from getting Jimmeh, Butler and Broom back, though will lose Wagner for most of the summer. Will take some stopping by ND or CD to prevent them taking the title. Great match for Wagner - continuing good form from Bangladesh.

will likely lose Ryder as well for the India series. but yeah, pretty good team.

Joe Carter made a run-a-ball 200 for ND A or something. Hardly a fear-inspiring bowling attack but still a pretty decent effort.

The more i see of Henry the more i like, the effortless action, getting in close to the stumps, the tight line and the effort ball which looks about the same as Boults (so 140ish) all scream potential.
