Would be quite disappointed if Ashwin was promoted to no 7 soon, he needs to spend another 2 years at least making the side purely through bowling to ensure he makes that spot his own, then when he is really established he can try and make batting improvements but if it happens too early he might lose his bowling forever

I think the next year or so will tell us a lot about where Ashwin might end up in regards to his career, we'll have to see if he can maintain a decent record in both disciplines overseas.
This all over. So far he has played 17 tests and got great figures but he has played 14 matches at home. Can he reproduce anything like the same figures away from home on faster bouncier tracks?

What he and the likes of Kohli, Pujara, Rohit and Shami do in the next year won't just shape those tours but potentially the next 6-8 years of Indian cricket. If they perform well away from home then India will have a very very good side if not they will be like the 90's again.

Would be great if he could average 35-40 overseas as a bowler. He is pretty much a shoe-in for home games atm.

Would love to see Braithwaite given another go in the WI line-up, they really need someone who can play a big patient innings at the top
He must be one of the most in form batters in WORLD CRICKET let alone the caribbean!!..but once again those stupid selectors and Gibson mess things up for us!!...that wasn't our best team on the field!!!..that's the only thing that still gives me hope that we aren't as crap as the result suggests.

I can understand the sentiment towards Shami for the MoTM award considering how rubbish we have been in terms of bowling in the last couple of years but I don't think giving it to Rohit was an issue. He came in to bat when we were in deep sh*t. It was his partnership with Dhoni initially that made sure we simply didn't fall like pack of cards and then the match winning partnership with Ashwin. I was quite convinced West Indies would lose it the moment we took a 100+ run lead. So, I think he deserved it. Probably Shami and Ashwin deserved it as much as him. But I don't see him getting MoTM award a big issue.

Dravid, referring to Sachin's epic 136 against Pakistan just said in hindi " Tendulkar made a brilliant hundred in 1998 against Chennai but India lost by 9 runs"

I love the guy to bits, but there are so many things wrong with this statement it hurts

couldn't agree more, the game was in the balance when Rohit walked in, it was as basically won when he left the crease

Are they making these mistakes on purpose? Sidhu pulling stats out of his backside as usual. Saying Tendulkar's average dropped from 55 to 42 when he captained. No it didn't u ****

Yeah I was half kidding when I said I'd rage if Rohit won MotM. Just as deserving as Ashwin and Shami. But he's a batsman and no one in their right mind would give a batsman MotM.

This is a disgrace. What on earth are WI thinking playing 5 batsman. First of all we all know WI are no #6. they got their by beating Zimbabwe and BD. As far Sammy WI will NEVER be competitive as long as he plays. Ramdin as well is a total joke. I cant believe he is still in the team. he has never ever deserved to play for WI. I am fuming! How much more disappointment can one take. Sammy needs to go and be replaced by Kirk Edwards and Ramdin has to go also. WI needs to find a batsman and train him to be a keeper. Every team in world cricket except New Zealand have wicketkeepers who are genuine batsman. WI seems to not realize how much of a competitive edge they lose when they basically have 5 batsman and 6 tailenders. How can you possibly think thats a reasonable team composition!!!!
This. Agree with most of what you said. Our run of victories were against teams of an equal standard (New Zealand) or lesser teams (Bangladesh and Zimbabwe).

We do have a bit of a wicket keeping crisis on our hands I must say. It is really holding us back. Ramdin is an excellent gloveman but his lack of runs is a huge problem. He looked awful at the crease in this match and Walton's form last season and for the A team was pretty good, so I'd be seriously tempted to bring him in for the 2nd test.

Sorry for repeating myself, but Sammy must go if we are to compete with the top sides.I don't know who will captain, either Gayle again or Samuels. It just shows how ludicrous our selectors are. They have chosen both a captain and a vice captain who are struggling to justify their place in the team.

Having said all that, We are not a million miles off (even if this result makes it appear so), we just need to get serious, stop handicapping ourselves unnecessarily and hope a gun wicket keeper batsman develops over the next year or two (Shane Dowrich, Nicholas Pooran and Shai Hope, I'm looking at you!). Our bowling is actually very good, we are just suffering from an injury crisis in the seam department at the moment.

My side for the next test (they won't do this to Sammy or Ramdin I don't think, but they should):

Gayle
Powell
Bravo
Samuels (captain)
Chanderpaul
Deonarine
Walton
Shillingford
Permaul
Cotterell
Roach

My side for New Zealand, or at least moving forward:

Gayle
Braithwaite/Powell (depends on form)
Bravo
Samuels (captain)
Chanderpaul
Deonarine/Edwards (depends on form)
Walton
Shillingford
Miller/Permaul/Seamer
Roach
Rampaul

Reserves:

Cotterell/Cummins, Best

Other random thought. The umpiring was very poor in this match, DRS would have had a field day. Tendulkar and Samuels both got shockers and there were a couple of clear lbws not given today. I am still trying to work out how Llong gave Samuels out, it was going miles over and clearly missing leg. Awful).

Indeed. Can add Kumar's and Kohli's dismissals to that as well.

What made the Samuels decision worse was that Llong nodded for half a minute after he raised his finger and mouthed "out. You're out" in a disgustingly over confident manner. Awful umpiring throughout the match

Agreed. Awful umpiring. Also how he spent 2/3 minutes trying to justify the decision to his fellow umpire. That would tend to indicate he realised how iffy that decision was very soon after he had made it. Let's hope he learns from this performance as that was not good enough for an umpire in international cricket.

Ramdin is not a good keeper and if he is not scoring then can't justify his place.
Brathwaite, sigh, on form deserves a place and Cummins deserves a run as well.
Rampaul really needs to stay fit and prove his ability to stay on the field to earn an our faith and an extended run.
