If aaron finch makes 7 ducks during the BBL do you think he gets given a go last summer? It's part of the package for me. It plays some part, but there's a lot of other stuff that goes into ODI selection too imo. And I think the new format won't really affect it's part in the package, other than a lesser amount of games (which tbf, is a loss and something CA should try to get back)
If Finch makes **** all in the BBL but after that tournament finishes he comes out in the next two ryobi matches and makes back to back centuries do you think the selectors wouldn't pick him in ODI's due to his poor t20 form?

And also, if he was given another chance during the England tour....well he's being picked on domestic form that happened 8 months ago

I think a lot of the post BBL domestic ODers actually took place after the ODI's for the summer had finished though

Make no mistake, this decision to make it a block at the start of the season has not been made for the good of Australian cricket, in terms of the quality aspect. It's been made for spectators 100%. Absolutely nothing to do with trying to improve the system.

As a spectator I like it. In terms of the benefits to the international game? Nope.

Yeah, it's sustained performance in domestic cricket that gets you picked, not one or two games running into the internationals

I don't really have any big problem with picking on 4 months old performances anyway, not if his recent form suggests he's in solid touch. just ftr. Like I just don't think that particular aspect is a big deal.

I don't see how playing 2 OD games a month under the old system helped the international game much, I mean, this actually replicates ODI tours and tournaments where you play a whole bunch in a row. Even though the home ODIs suffer a bit this is good mental preparation for younger players coming through IMO

Because you can see a player who is class through the course of a season much more than four weeks.

Four weeks four months ago.

There's no ideal solution. The Big Bash is essentially paying for these competitions to run the way they do so it has to stay where it is and the Shield and Ryobi Cups have to work around it, maximise their relevance in terms of both preparation and indication for selection.

maybe bailey might prefer to flip burgers during the domestic season #easyjoke #hatethegamenotheplaya

Yeah I agree. There shouldn't be that many places up for grabs anyway and frankly if a player had a rubbish Shield season and a rubbish Big Bash I'd question the reliability of a good Ryobi season no matter which order the games came in, unless it was a trend that had continued for several seasons - and again the order of the matches wouldn't mean much to me. I mean, are there actually any players we can think of who we'd like to see in the ODI squad despite the fact that they're likely to put in mediocre performances in both Shield and BBL cricket? Ferguson maybe?

I will say Bailey actually saying this is a good thing. I really didn't like Haddin's press conference the other day, when he just kept on repeating how he liked the new format to an extent I felt like he was told to say it

He admitted he'd be whinging if he didn't play for NSW, didn't he?

Bailey is saying why not give the players the best chance? Young blokes who aren't in the selectors minds at the start of the season who have a good start to the grade season aren't going to get a go in ODD because they're already over by the end of round two or three in grade.

Yeah especially when they tend to chuck the young blokes in the odd's before they get a shield game too. and there's no proper second xi comp either.
