England Tour Squad for Australia

I'm actually convinced it's partly because they think he could be a really decent gloveman, he makes mistakes, but he reminds me more of a young Prior, I think he has the ability and the instincts. One of the Reasons I would rather have him at Somerset than CK is that kiesweter has worked with top coaches for a while now, but still makes basic mistakes, Jos looks to have more about him with the gloves.
I said his glovework was poor earlier this summer but it is clearly improving all the time. A couple of the stunners he took in CT he wouldn't have taken 6-12 months ago. He is better with gloves than Kieswetter already in my opinion. Difficulty of keeping two guys happy with only one slot available.

The squad will be announced as soon as this one day series is over I would imagine, means they can put any new player who does well in the ODI leg of that tour. Can't see them announcing the test squad then meeting again a week later to sort out ODI and T20 squads as well as Loins.

The Ashes squad of 17 will be announced on 23rd September this year. I guess they will announce Central Contracts as well. Can't see how Morgan can keep his not having played a Test in the last contract period.

Yeah, with them changing the schedule to accommodate IPL there is no reason for him to get one at all.

Do you think cricketers don't get paid for limited overs appearances?

They get increment contracts, central contracts are generally reserved for the blokes in and around the Test side.

Yeah, Morgan's probably the first player to ever get an English central contract for limited overs alone. Although I certainly think he was closer in the test frame last year than others would like to think.

If someone pretty much plays all limited overs games, they certainly should get a central contract IMO. I realise it's not a bottomless money pit but I don't see why they shouldn't.

The way it works at the moment for England is that the nailed on Test certainties automatically get contracts and then, if you play a few limited overs games (or Tests despite not getting a contract), you get automatically upgraded to an incremental contract. The limited overs blokes certainly do end up contracted but they need to actually be selected in the eleven a few times to do it. I don't think it's a bad system. Morgan, as Cabinet said, was the first legitimate exception to that last season when the contracts were announced but he is a bit of a strange case in that he's penned in for literally every limited overs game and is even a captaincy candidate when players are rested. There's also the fact that Morgan was named in the Test squad a few days after the contract list was announced, even though he didn't end up playing.

The Metro has announced that Tim Bresnan will be in the squad going to Australia to try and play in at least the second test.

Disclaimer: It's the Metro

Think Bres is more or less nailed on, anyway. With the performance squad down under too there's no shortage of replacements waiting to step up.

If we do take him will one of Tremmers, Onions or Rankin miss out tho? Is six specialist seamers in a squad of 16 (maybe 17) one too many?

Yeah plenty of good bowlers, though none of real quality after Anderson/Broad. Will be interesting to see who the take.

Any of those three in the Ashes squad would make babeh Jeebus weep, tbh.

Our success over the past three or four years has been based around a four man attack; why get funkeh now?

Woakes should be ahead of Stokes for red ball cricket. Better batsmen, and neither are good enough to just be picked as bowlers if they want to go with 5. Even as a Bears fan I wouldn't take Woakes though, as mentioned above England's best make up is a 4 man attack. However is Woakes a worse batsmen than Bairstow? Debatable.

Wouldn't take Stokes, Woakes or Bopara. None are good enough to be test players.
Now or ever? Because it's not like England have an endless conveyor belt of talented players to call upon. Tough life for Stokes and Woakes at 22 and 24 and never going to make it as test cricketers. Neither are good enough at the moment but plenty worse players have made England squads, even in recent times. It's not like most countries squads are going to be made up off 16 or 17+ players all capable of being good test cricketers at the present moment. Australia the only team in recent memory capable of that accolade probably.

Are James Taylor or Jonny Bairstow test quality at present?

I wouldn't take Stokes or Woakes if Bresnan is fit but county cricket doesn't produce enough good players to go around just dismissing two of the best young players in county cricket as never gonna make its.
