Bagapath's Greatest XI

honestbharani

Whatever it takes!!!
Sunil Gavaskar
Gordon Greenidge
Sir Viv Richards
Sachin Tendulkar
Brian Lara
Allan Border (C)
Adam Gilchrist (WK)
Sir Richard Hadlee
Malcolm Marshall
Shane Warne
Joel Garner

More reason to have Lara at 4 and split the 3 lefties at 5 6 and 7 AFAIC.. And I would rather have my attacking batters at 3 and 4 than 3 and 5. Maybe it is a personal thing, but I always associate #5 in the batting order with a solid dependable but unflashy player.. More Collingwood than KP, More Steve Waugh than Mark Waugh and More Chanderpaul than Hooper.. So really, more Lara than Sachin :)

Fantastic write up. Brought up so many good memories. AB indeed was a champion cricketer. Always under rated (as you mention probably because of his no frills approach to the game)

Good selection and great write up. A lot of what Burgey said in the DoG thread today comes through here, and it feels good to have a tough cookie there at number 6. Great side, Bagapath :) They will put on a great show all comers. Only flaw, and this is me quibbling, is that of a fifth bowler, but AB was good for that too, so maybe I should shut my trapper :D

Great write ups man! Who do you think Ambrose's bowling style is more similar to - Garner or McGrath?
I have always found him and McGrath to be more similar. All three were tall, 6'5" +. They were uniformly very accurate and bloody minded. Garner was faster than Ambrose who in turn was faster than McGrath. But I think Curtley and Pigeon had similar game plans. Their stock ball was on top of off stump kicking up from a good length. Garner's bouncer to the body and yorker to the toes fetched him more wickets. Honestly these differences are superficial IMO. At the level these guys operated in, all three must have been equally difficult to face. Their similar career records stand proof of that.

Strange I always heard Garner was a bit on the slower side, pace wise I always thought of him a bit Mcgrath pace. But you're right, Mcgrath and Ambrose did seem similar to me, both has a similar just outside off stump line, and just short of a length.
Heard accounts that Garner would bowl either at your neck or at your toes.... Must have been a nightmare to face

Great team and even better write-ups Bagapath. I thoroughly enjoyed reading them. Now if you had only gone with Imran at 6, I would be even more pleased. :p

I thought for a moment, it could be Kapil Dev too.Baga, how come the guy who's avatar you wear didn't find a place in your team?

I only really saw the last of AB's career, when Australia were on the rise. At that stage there was a great aura around him, and I remember wishing he'd never get out every time he walked out to bat. How I would love to have him in the team now against comparably ***** weak attacks.

So who's team is next I'm enjoying reading these XI's in this way.

When Richard Hadlee starts the first over with Adam Gilchrist behind the stumps, this will be the field setting.

Off Side:

Viv Richards - First Slip
Brian Lara - Second Slip
Shane Warne - Third Slip
Joel Garner - Gully
Sunil Gavaskar - Cover Point
Sachin Tendulkar - Mid Off

On Side:

Malcolm Marshall - Square leg
Gordon Greenidge - Short leg
Allan Border - Mid Wicket
