DoG's Top 100 Test Batsmen - The Top 25

Coronis

International Coach
Coronis, what's your rationale behind ranking Headley ahead of Hammond as a batsman but picking Hammond over Headley in your All Time XI? Is it a case of considering Hammond adaptable enough to bat down the order but that Headley was a pure no.3, or something else?
For me, they are quite close as batsmen, but, yes that did come into it. Mainly it was Hammond's reputation as such a great fielder, along with his bowling, which could be useful alongside Sobers, as partnership breakers that drew me in over Headley. There isn't that much of a difference between their batting. Its like the classic Warne/Murali argument. I believe Murali was the better bowler, but Warnie adds with the bat, and as an exceptional fielder as well.

It will take me a week or so to make the changes that I have in mind based on the last few pages' discussion.

Then I will present the top 10 with those amendments.
Like others, I also think you should finish the list as it is. It doesn't matter what ranks they finish at. We have been looking at all different components (most great innings, best innings with average, best peak points). All that will become irrelevant if you change your calculation now. Fun is in seeing how players ranked on one criterion applied uniformly even if it is not perfect. So please change anything. It's your work after all.

Shock, horror! The man who is adored and worshipped by millions has only been rated as the 10th best test batsmen of all time. Indian fans raging would do well to realise that this is purely a statistical study, and cannot take into account that Tendulkar has the weight of India on his shoulders every time he comes out to bat. So, let's look at the stats. His averages are excellent without being truly mindblowing. He also has a low amount of significant innings per match. This is due to a lot of Tendulkar's best innings not leading to Indian wins. What gets Tendulkar into the top 10 is the sheer length of his career and the number of centuries he has scored against top tier opposition. He is one of only two batsmen to have maxed out on 150 career points. However, quality points are what really matters and Tendulkar is damaging his rating in this analysis the longer he prolongs his career. After his last great innings in 2010, already three years ago, Tendulkar was probably rated around no.6. I hope he has a good series against South Africa because as much as I hate the illogical worship of some of his fans, it would just be wrong not to have Sachin in the top 10.

Didn't predict that at all. Great explanation though.

Bagapath is going to loose his mind.

Wow, thought Tendulkar would be near the top due to how long his career is.

Keep it coming.

In a vaguely related matter, would it be possible to post up a Top Ten of the most highly rated innings?

EDIT: Also, if Tendulkar's highest rated innings was that in a loss to Pakistan - how highly rated was Shahid Afridi's "match winning" knock in that same Test. Would it be true to say that the ODI specialist Afridi has a more highly rated Test match innings than Sachin Tendulkar??
