Great thread. The teams here were picked pretty early in the decade, so it was almost entirely a prediction thread. Now we have a lot more evidence and performances in the decade to judge on. Looking back, it's fair to say that some of the selections are interesting, with hindsight, but we'll probably bump this thread again in a couple of years and my picks will look stupid.

Anyway, here's my effort.

All of the second openers are pretty unproved, but I'd expect at least one of them to be pushing to open alongside Cook by 2020.

Steyn has been the outstanding bowler so far this decade, but could run out of steam too far away from finish line. Fast bowling stocks are really competitive. Roach and Southee unlucky to miss out. Certainly healthier than when people were suggesting Gul and Sreesanth.

Weird squeezing of 5 bowlers in there, though I appreciate the effort. I think if you're going to do that you have to go Ashwin over Lyon and bat him at seven.

Yeah, I forgot about Ashwin for some reason. He or Jadeja would would definitely have to come in really.

Five bowlers was kind of a cheating way of getting in as many of the bowlers I rate as possible, and not really feeling comfortable with having a specialist batsman (i.e. not a keeper) at 7. I'm not usually a fan of five bowlers when it weakens the batting, although Ashwin, Philander, Broad at 7, 8, 9 is pretty good. Having a keeper batsman as good as de Villiers can allow you to get in an extra bowler as well if you want.

Some wildcards there, made an effort to get round to as many countries as possible, some Bangladesh players like Tamin and Robiul Islam a little unlucky perhaps, but they don't play enough. I honestly think the SC are producing the only good batsmen these days, hence Thirrimanne, Shafiq and Pujara feature, the WI also producing some good talent while Samuels is establishing himself as world class now.

Steyn gets in only just cos of age, Pattinson in ahead of Starc and Junaid in as the major swing bowler, Swann will play on for a while yet while Ajmal and Herath will be gone in 2 years you'd think.

EDIT: Philander also unlucky, misses out just to Pattinson, looked again, Kohli probably should find a place, but I wanted Thirrimanne and Shafiq in there for being able to hold up outside the SC (Kohli has sort of done this anyway though). Maybe he slots in ahead of Samuels.

Ignoring the fact that half of the side we'll select in 7 years time probably haven't debuted yet. Biggest question marks over Smith and Starc, but I reckon if Starc can get his radar right as he develops he'll be gun, and, well, Smith will probably be the first to drop out for a future gun that we haven't seen yet (hence putting Kohli alongside).

Jadeja could also shunt it, tbh.

Half probably an exaggeration, but it wouldn't surprise me if the last batting and bowling slots (potentially the all-rounder slot as well) are filled by guys not yet on the scene. We don't exactly have a huge number of spinners who look World XI worthy and have most of the decade left in them, for example.

Suppose it depends how long you have to play into a decade to be considered for the side, is it say 6 years or does it have to be more? Same goes for any new players that emerge before the end of the decade I suppose.

If playing up to 2016 is deemed long enough then not sure we will see all that many changes from a current world XI with a few obvious exceptions.

would have thought Ashwin, Swann and Lyon could easily find themselves in this team if they continue to perform well for the next 5 years, I expect all of them to play for at least that long from now
