The thing is that Mark Taylor was actually a good test match batsman.
Watson seemingly being given more leeway and I distinctly remember the selectors being thought insane for giving Tubbs two years (almost three, really) to find another ton.

mark taylor wasnt a match winner tbf

Tangles

International Vice-Captain
So Watto hasn't made a half century in 12 innings. We dropped Hughes who had made 3 50s in his last 7 innings. It's MUCH more vital that we pick the best batsmen in a side that has terrible batting.

#dropwatto
Allrounder and ex VC. Who needs runs?

Taylor looked horrible in virtually every innings during that period but Oz could afford to carry him

Easier to do when the teams a Juggernaut. They couldnt drop the captain though and then repeated it with Punter.

Stapel

International Regular
Bres is actually a tad bit underrated. He is admittedly not the same bowler as he was circa 2011, but he's above average and fits the role of workhorse/handy wicket taker very well.
I guess all discussion about who should play (Bres, Finn, Tremlett or Onions) is really luxuary problem

It's in England's favour they have a 2nd testworthy attack with Finn, Tremlett, Onions & Panesar. I'm not saying that attack is close to the first choice, but it's definitively testworthy.

Was given the benefit of the doubt against tough oppo too, from memory. Massive benefit of some not-so-significant doubt....

The hell, umpire.

Fair shocking appeal, tbh. Swann's comments about walking looking even more ridiculous after **** like this.
