I mean, it really is utterly hilarious that we're struggling to find a guy who deserves to get dropped
More a case of finding five who don't, tbf.

I mean, natural justice says Twatto, but it won't happen.

If Warner comes in Boof will just have to arbitrarily pick one for the arse. I guess Hughes has had the longest current run in the side without properly convincing.

It's a weird one. As you say, all bar Clarke deserve to be dropped, but none are really stinking it up - they've all scored at least some runs on the tour.

Again, although it probably should be one of the openers, the fact that they weren't playing the tour match suggests they won't be dropped. It will probably be Hughes, but given that Maxwell and Tsolike scored big runs and Elgar got a massive double, I'm not convinced Warner should play itbt.

Hughes is such a frustrating Cricketer though hey. If we are picking an Australian team to play in a First Class match Hughes is one of our best batsman. If we are picking an Australian team to play a Test, he isn't one of our best and its a pick on potential. It must be similar to how England felt with the talented Hick and Ramprakash.

Haha yeah. In the 90's/00's he'd be lucky to play Test cricket right now.

It would be Hughes 3rd axing from the team and you would think that would be the end in normal times. But in the "cupboard is bare" times we are in where 1 ton for the A team on a road gets you a spot he just needs to flay another FC attack which he's good at anyway.

If Boof wasnt coach then my money would be on Clarke getting Uzi fired.

The problem with earmarking the 2 openers for the whole series is that if evidence builds that 1 of them should go, say Twatto, he will just slap 2 80's in the 5th test to get another full series at home. Ironically Rogers is the one who will need a big score and runs to justify his spot given his age. Twatto just needs to get a few flashy 50's.

I don't think Australia are really at a stage where they can drop a young player and say that's it for two or three years. Even if Hughes misses out at Old Trafford he'll still be in the fold for the next few tests in England and in the return series.

This is the bunch they've got. People can talk about the others who should be in, but really, it's amazing how much a player improves in peoples eyes when they're not playing. Australia are going to be using these guys (the younger ones at lest) for a while and I think it's just about getting the best combination for each test. Not picking Hughes isn't a massive statement of a drop like it was for the 3rd test in 2009 or after Hobart in 2011.

He might benefit from a few years in shield like Hayden did but this is a different era. Short term thinking. A bad run by our bats and a few good knocks out of the team and your back in contention.

hughes on these dry pitches against swann is probably our biggest liability so that's why he has to make way for davey. he has a strong upside, but even if swann had a relapse of his herpes and couldnt bowl until day 3, when hughes is 342* you'd still fancy him getting out within 3 overs of swan

He does look a liability but he looks way better at it when he has runs under his belt and isn't under pressure to get if the mark. Which is why he should open and not fill every other position.

same could be said for most of our batsmen though, Khawaja included

Clarke and Smitteh the only ones I have confidence in starting against spin. Rads not bad if we include number 7.

Hughes was brilliant first dig, first test when every other batsman failed. And that on a dry wicket taking some spin.

Yeah, Hughes has been terrible all series if you discount the really important dig he played in the first innings of the first test.
