Allenby definitely a name that should be thrown in on the all-rounder side, and maybe even Tendo or Napier. Yet obviously not long-term.

Was busy, so didn't get to see/hear Turdbach's bowling first hand. Looks like he has most of his overs out of the way before the real carnage took place, had a few bits of good luck and still managed 10 overs nought for 87.

I bought 15 pork pies earlier today from York (for family and friends in Teesside - well yea I've had two already as well), there were about 80 at the buffet on Sunday I organised. But if someone mentions pie the first thing that springs to mind will be that ****ing useless tattooed moron - it will probably come up in one of those psychology tests after I assault the ****ing imbecilic selectors. Is this some sort of ****ing in-joke with them or what?

What's worse is I read some guff about changing the 'balance' from 6 bats/5 bowlers to 7 and 4. Err we've been playing with 10 men because of the bescrawled buffoon. Woakes has basically been playing as a batsman who bowls a bit. So we want to make the bowling even worse and to top it off the implication means that sack of ****e from Essex might get a gig, yet a-****ing-gain.

The Woakes predicament is worse than the Dernbach one because Woakes is actually in the CT squad and Cook clearly doesn't trust his bowling. Woakes bowled all his overs between the 9th and 28th and went 7-0-49-0(incidentally dernbach had figures of 7-0-44-0 at one time). If you can't trust Woakes to bowl anything from 35-50 and he can't displace Dernbach as a bowler we really are screwed. He isn't even a wickettaking option with the new ball so he's just there to get through a few overs mid innings. You may as well play Bopara because he's probably going to bowl the middle overs better than Woakes and is a better batsman and fielder.

 This is great stuff

Imagine if the Poms had to deal with having fast bowlers made out of paper mache like we do

2 injuries and you guys are contemplating recalling Ravi and Samit

2 injuries and we need to decide whether to risk Pattinson, Harris, etc or call on one of about 6 others who are better than Dernbach and Woakes

Far cry from a couple of years ago

That and Samit's a better bowler than Dernbach.

The fact that our best test bowlers are also our best OD bowlers isn't anything new.

No you may as well play a tub of lard over Bopara, because it isn't Ravi Bopara.
I may be completely off base here, but having read many of your posts and reading between the lines, I'm starting to get the first inkling of an impression (and correct me if I'm wrong) that you're not a Bopara fan?

I actually think Bopara would be a better option than Woakes.

McCullum trying to override Hesson's talk of giving the whole squad a game. Also preparing Franklin for a trip to the woodshed -
I ****ing knew it.

Q: How can you tell when Hesson is lying?
A: His lips are moving.

Wasn't it Bopara who ripped Australia apart last summer in the ODI's. Top runscorer and only Mckay on the aus side took more wickets than Ravi. Man of the series.

It is only really a one day problem though, I think there are a number of bowlers that could do a decent job in a test match, in England at any rate.

Why would those bowlers not be good enough for ODIs?

It doesn't make sense to me. If you are a good bowler in tests there's no reason in my mind why you can't be at least semi-good in limited overs. Granted the mindset is different but the skills are largely the same. I don't understand the fascination with 'odi' bowlers like Dernbach and Woakes. The only thing which really matters in any format is good control and movement.

Pretty sure Woakes is more of a test bowler than LO

Chris Martin was a reasonable/average test bowler but he was ****ing awful at ODIs.

Likewise, when James Franklin could actually bowl in the mid 2000s he was a good test bowler but awful ODI bowler.

Wagner, Boult, Bracewell and O'Brien are all bowlers who are dire to varying degrees in ODIs but have had success in tests.

And that's just NZ. Australia has the same trend. Siddle springs to mind.

Thing is I don't think it counts for fast bowlers though. The skillset is largely the same
It's really not that simple. Some bowlers are far more successful against batsmen who have a defensive mindset, such as Philander, while others need batsmen to be coming at them hard to have any influence, or just work better in short bursts like Finn.

Speaking of that, Philander is definitely a good shout imo. absolute H4x FC average, incredible test record, but pretty awful in domestic one day with an average of 35. Hasn't played many ODIs but there's a reason for that.

Vettori was an excellent ODI bowler for far longer than he was a good test bowler.

Mills would be an awful test bowler.

Southee's test bowling became terrible when he was a good ODI and T20 bowler.
