*Official* Road to 2013 Ashes

I wonder if the selectors will decide that Rogers is the new Hussey and play him at 6. I could easily see this being the team:

Cowan
Warner
Hughes
Watson
Clarke
Rogers
Haddin
Siddle
Harris
Pattinson
Lyon

Which is probably close to the best side that we can pick at the moment (provided that Watson bowls).

Oh yeah that's why Burns was overlooked. The same reason Rogers and Cowan aren't in the A team.

There might be 8 lefties in the squad, our top 7 will have just the 4 though in all likelihood so it's not all that bad. The top order lefties will probably be out before Swann comes on lol.

Burns was probably left out since he'll be playing county cricket anyway.

Overall I'm happy with the squad. Wouldn't have minded Smith getting a spot to at least give another right handed option but he'll be in England anyway for the A tour so not too bad.

I find it slightly weird that Haddin will not be going to the Champions Trophy. I mean, Wade's ODI performances...

Rogers has a very limited game, he can be bogged down easily with disciplined bowling and lacks the game to be able to put the opposition on their heels by manipulating the field when they try and tie him down.

He is like Khawaja without the leg side play and added fire power. For the same reason I haven't wanted Khawaja in the middle order without first serious work on his game (as I have said on this forum on many occasions) I wouldn't want Rogers.

Khawaja has time on his side. Still young and can easily develop those skills. Rogers on the other hand is in the very twilight on his career and I think he lacks the time needed to be able to make this change.

Pity you can't pick that up by reading cricinfo hey Longers?
Nah ****, it's pretty obvious we both commute to the MCG and Lord's every time Rogers plays an FC game at home. Weird I've never seen you there.

Unless you're basing this on Big Bash and Ryobi Cup, which is the only chance you'd have to play argument ad Dickinson in terms of watching him on TV. Which, in terms of releasing pressure with big shots, has no relevance to FC cricket. At all.

Rogers can be pinned down like any batsman, but the advantage of his age is that he has the maturity to not get out with a stupid shot when he's pinned down. Remember what Murali Vijay and Pujara did at Hyderabad on day 2? How they rode through Siddle and Patto's early hostility and only started to dominate in the third session with an older ball and tired bowlers? Rogers is the closest we have to a batsman with the discipline to do that, and he deserves a chance to prove it.

There's plenty of firepower x-factor game-changers in the line-up if you want to put up 250 scores at 4 rpo. I haven't found any good reason to expect more of Warner, Hughes, Watson, Wade and Haddin.

Well that settles it then, given a 50 average in Australian and English conditions isn't good enough for you.
So you concede you're arguing on the basis of his cricinfo stats and that you can not address the concerns that I have raised directly? You have just written what you think he does based on reading his profile.

Ok cool.

You have watched Rogers in first class cricket extensively.

Stats don't lie, you do.

Doesn't sound like much chance of that, but Wade playing as a batsman isn't out of the question.
If Watson is bowling, then there's no room as a batsman for Wade

He'd have to unseat one of either Rogers, Warner, Clarke, Hughes, Cowan

Can't see it

Overall, selectors have done a good job

Could have been a lot worse and there are no really contentious selections

Ok so now you are debating on the mistaken belief that I haven't watched Rogers in first class cricket? Righto, keep sticking to that.

Must be just something about dat cricinfo profile pic that tells you about his style hey? Spare me.

Generally agree. I'm really only working on the assumption of Watson maybe breaking a nail and not being able to bowl. If it comes down to a non-bowling Watson/Khawaja/Wade as the 6th batsman then Wade is not far away from being the best pick.

The other way he could get in though is if any of the top 5 get injured/suffer catastrophic form. He's no real show for the first test, but over a 5 test series it's not out of the question. I'd say it's a pretty fair chance he'll play at least one test as a batsman. I'd have his nose in front of Uzi frankly.

I question the marketability of Rogers, frankly
