Haha, Southee got ripped on TMS. "If all he's got is military medium, on a pitch like this where you need to bend your back, find someone better".

Didn't see a ball tbf but Southee must have been bowling bloody slow and floaty to get that review. Usually gets called unlucky.

Good to see Martin keeping it tight BTW, been surprisingly decent. Good start by England tho, could still target a draw here.

Haha, fully agree on Boycott's comments on Southee. He was really just ambling in during his run-up. Was bowling well within himself. Didn't sound like he was generating any kind of consistent swing either.

Pfft, southee's pace has never really has anything to do with his effectiveness at all. He just needs to swing the bloody thing and pitch six balls in the same place. Anyone complaining about Steyn bowling within himself?

I was at the game today. and thought I must come back and post about Southee's run up. And I wondered if it had always lacked intent like today? But based on your post everyone noticed this and it was just today.

All the bowlers looked flat - I thought Boult wasn't steaming in either (although the speed gun had him at 140 plenty of times) and only wager looked from my bad vantage point as thought he was giving it 100%.

Really impressed by Compton's inning. Trott not so much. Compton had to see off the new ball and deserved a 100 more. Plus he had two awesome pull shots.

NZ didn't drop any catches. Boult looked like the bowler who they got onto the most.

Final comment is that this would have been a good toss to lose.

James Anderson wouldn't have got any swing on this pitch and bowls at the same pace as Southee.

Stupid criticism IMO.

Boult was really frustrating. He was visibly the quickest of the three seamers, and produced the most false shots/edges/lbw shouts. As a result, without thinking about things too much, I felt that he was the best of the bowlers on display. But then I stopped and looked at his figures and realised that he was being biffed around at 4+ runs per over for most of the day, primarily because he produced a lot of leg side filth, and an equal amount of short ****.

Anyway, it looks like the last 2 days of the test might be rained off, so it's possible that New Zealand will get away with this (only fair, I suppose, given that England got an assist from the rain in Dunedin). All up, this could be one of the most forgettable test series in recent years, precisely at the time when the NZC really needed an exciting product to distract attention from it's phenomenal botching of last year's captaincy switch.

Not if Southee was jogging in to bowl like he was participating in an early season warm-up. The pace itself wasn't the issue (although Southee is bowling noticeably slower than he was during New Zealand's tours of the sub-continent). It's the commitment and effort that he's showing. He looks...tired and lazy. Maybe he's still not 100% fit after his 2 month layoff, but he certainly doesn't look like the leader of an attack who's giving it his all.

P'raps now he doesn't have captain Taylor harassing him he's satisfied with being a slothful top dog rather than a hungry one.
