Usman didn't really grasp his chance though, and am not convinced he'd make a bigger overall contribution than Moz
With Watson not bowling, it really shuts the door on a specialist batsman at six - with such a big emphasis on workload, we'll never again go in with just four bowlers

Hard to feel too sorry for Usman actually
Averaged sub 40 in FC cricket this Summer, and hasn't jagged a half century in his two completed innings in India
Agree with MWaugh that he needs to be more hungry for big scores, needs to rotate the strike better, and generally show more vitality, more chutzpah if you will

I'm actually very happy with the team they chose, having expected Doherty or Maxwell to get an unwarranted gig.
I always prefer to play 6 specialist batsmen but, in the circumstances, I believe Henriques was a shrewd choice. Playing 2 spinners would have been folly because that would have allowed the Indian batsmen to take no risks against either of them while comfortably scoring at 3.5 to 4rpo off both. This would alleviate any pressure built up by the pacemen.
Now the Aussie pacemen, if they bowl as tightly they did in the warm up games, can strangle the Indian batsmen. This means their eyes will light up when Lyon or Clarke come on and they may go too hard at them and gift a wicket. Lyon has shown so far that he is far more succesful against batsmen who attack him.
All this explain why Henriques will actually play a crucial role with the ball. We don't need to him get many wickets just to keep it really tight at one end ( In the two tour games he went at just 1.6rpo). If he can do that it will a) Allow the pacemen to attack in short 3-4 over bursts at top speed b) Create pressure which could see the batsmen hit out at Lyon and Clarke.

Much like us in the 90's. The fact they have a few Mark Ealham's in and around the squad says it all. they guffawed at us for our constant reeling off of bits and pieces players who weren't good enough for international cricket yet now throw them out like confetti.

As an Aussie fan I have to say that is very harsh. You are exagerrating your criticism. A Test bowling average of 28 to go with a batting average of 21 is very reasonable. So lay off Ealham

Khawaja had 2 tour games to put up a score to make it difficult to ignore him but he didn't do it. Unless Cowan gets dropped at some point to elevate Watson he is competing with Hughes and Watson for the spots they currently occupy.
He does look a classy bat in flight but he needs to fight his detractors with runs at this point.

Khawaja definitely has a technique suited to playing quality pace bowling in difficult conditions so he could play a major role in the Ashes and the tour of SA next year.
But I think we really need an all-rounder in this series given the pitches will be flat and most of our pacemen have struggled with heavy workloads. The fast guys will be much more effective if they are able to operate in short, sharp bursts where they go for the throat rather than having to operate as stock bowlers.
I imagine Siddle, Starc and Pattinson will be unlikely to bowl more than 15 or 16 overs in a day's play. Henriques will chip in with 10-12 overs, possibly more if he is on song, leaving Lyon and Clarke to bowl about 30 overs between them.
That is ideal because the quicks should have no problem with that workload, given it's just 5 overs per session. And they are the ones most likely to get the big wickets, rather than Lyon and Clarke.
Obviously the tracks in India are slow and flat, but if you pitch the ball up at 140kmh+ and get it to swing you don't need pace off the wicket to trouble the batsman.
If Starc bowls like he did in the recent ODIs, he could have a breakthrough series. I think he will really trouble Sehwag in particular with his pacy late inswing.
