Pakistan ATG Team - Open Voting

Everyone voted for Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, and Waqar Younis, except for Fred who cast a vote for the deserved Fazal Mahmood. Therefore, the team so far is;

Younis Khan
Javed Miandad
Inzamam-ul-Haq
Imran Khan
Wasim Akram
Waqar Younis

The No.6 position was a tie between Mohammad Yousuf and Mushtaq Mohammad so we will need to re-vote later in order to break the deadlock.

But in the meantime let's complete the lower order so we will have a better idea on what type of No.6 will be necessary. Therefore, please select a 4th bowler and a wicket-keeper;

Suggested 4th Bowlers
Fazal Mahmood
Sarfraz Narwaz
Shoaib Akhtar
Abdul Qadir
Saqlain Mushtaq
Iqbal Qasim
Mushtaq Ahmed
Danish Kaneria

Suggested Wicket-Keepers
Wasim Bari
Imtiaz Ahmed
Rashid Latif
Moin Khan

I wonder whether there will be more pace, or will a spinner back-up Imran, Wasim, and Waqar? It's going to be interesting...............

Why not have Mushtaq Muhammad as a 4th bowler (averaged 29). So then we can have MoYo as no 6 to solidify the batting line up.

I'd go for Mushtaq Mohammad, the spinning option has to come into it on the right pitch, and gives so much more balance.

MoYo ahead of Inzi is like picking a donkey to do the work of a warhorse - theres absolutely no comparison between the two. inzamam and miandad, and mebbe hanif and saeed, are about the only absolutely top drawer pakistani batsmen

my fourth bowler would be fazal mahmood. perfect foil for the pace trio. could keep it well tight and was, by some accounts, bereft of the egocentricity that has plagued the pakistani players over the years

dunno who to pick as the keeper. would go with rashid latif

mushtaq mohammad at six helps with the balance. hes probs about as good a batsman as yousuf

Just a request - when you vote for your player(s) could you make it obvious with an underline or something, as I don't want to accidently miss any nominations because they are hidden somewhere in the middle of a sentence.

I doubt he’ll get many votes, but I’ll go for Abdul Qadir as the fourth bowler and Wasim Bari as the keeper.

Qadir I have a soft spot for. That unique bowling action. That dangerous googly. Loved it all. He was a large part of the reason that Pakistan were able to battle the West Windies to a draw in the ‘80’s when everyone else was getting crushed. He always gave it his all, another thing I admired about him.

Bari is simply the greatest keeper we ever produced and deserves to be in the team. Yes, he can’t bat. That’s why we’ll have a pure batsman at #6 to compensate.

Fazal Mahmood, assuming Mushtaq Mohammad wins he'll give them more variety.

Rashid Latif was a great pure keeper and wasn't a bunny like Bari.

As much as I love Fazal Mahmood and want him to be included in the team, but I would like to stick to the fact that a proper spin is still needed in any ATG side.

Picking Abdul Qadir as fourth bowler and Wasim Bari as keeper.

Fazal Mohammed and Rashid Latif

I'd love to play a 2nd spinner though Qadir or Saqlain

Will be voting for Mustaq Mohammad for the #6 position. He was as good as the other spinners and ciuld bat in the middle order.

Hypothetically, if Mushtaq Mohammad (leg-spinner) ends up winning the No.6 spot then it makes more sense to have a doosra bowler like Saqlain Mushtaq in the side, or even another quick. Of course, if a specialist batsman like Yousuf or Abbas gain the No.6 spot then a leggie like Qadir fits perfectly.

In other words, our style of selection process is inherently flawed because we cannot, and do not, have ALL the necessary information in order to make a perfect choice. But I guess, a little bit of confusion does make the whole thing more challenging and fun!

Agree entirely. Both with the principle and the specific example about not picking two leg-spinners in the same side, so whichever gets selected first will influence the likelihood of the other being selected.

For my picks, Rashid Latif as keeper, Saqlain Mushtaq as fourth bowler.

sidenote - Pervez Sajjad is a bit of a forgotten player in Pakistani history, isn't he?

4th bowler will certainly depend on the conditions, it's unfair to have a default 4th bowler tbh

I'd certainly play Saqlain over Fazal in subcontinent

Pervez who?

I didn't see Bari keep too much but from all accounts he was very solid behind the stumps. Latif was very very good behind the stumps and he could hold the bat as well unlike Bari.

I am caught between Fazal as the 4th pacer or Ajmal as my spinner.

It would be tempting to have a pakistani quartet. Having 4 sub 25 average bowlers in my eleven would be awesome.

FTR in 34 matches Fazal averaged 24.70 for his 139 wickets and had 13 5fers and 4 10fers
