Pakistan ATG Team - Open Voting

Red

The normal awards that everyone else has
MoYo at 6. Waqar, Wasim and Imran are as good a pace trio as you'll see, and need.

Here are the votes so far;

Mohammed Yousuf = 8
Mushtaq Mohammed = 7

Imran Khan = 1
Zaheer Abbas = 1
Saleem Malik = 1

I really thought that after the fiery debate in the Asian ATG thread there would be more people pushing for Imran Khan at No.6 because of his excellent average in that position (61.86, 20 innings). But the voting is conclusive - Imran has been rejected as a batting-centric allrounder!

Instead the overwhelming opinion is that there that should be more depth in the batting line-up. Therefore, it's come down to an exciting tug-O-war between Mohammed Yousuf and Mushtaq Mohammed.

So what's it going to be at No.6? A classy specialist batsman OR an allrounder-spinner who gives the team a good 5th bowler option?

More time is definitely needed to sort that question out. Please vote!

I think most everyone would classify Imran as a bowling all-rounder. He's an ATG bowler who's competent/good with the bat. If he’s batting as high as 6 on an ATG team, then that team’s batting order is weak.

I still think we need a specialist bat at 6. I’m not worried about the bowling holding up with Imran, Wasim, Waqar + one of Fazal/Shoaib/Saqi/Qadir. I’ll take that bowling lineup confidently against any ATG opposing team. The batting, OTOH, still gives me pause. The more specialist batsmen we have coming in before Imran, the better IMO.

That's why my team with both Yousuf and Mushtaq (also has a really good bowling average) would be very strong in both batting and bowling.

Incidently, here is the ESPN Cricinfo Pakistan ATG team; All-time XI | Cricinfo Magazine | ESPN Cricinfo

I don't think that it would participate in many drawn Test matches;

01. Saeed Anwar
02. Hanif Mohammad
03. Zaheer Abbas
04. Javed Miandad
05. Inzamam-ul-Haq
06. Imran Khan
07. Rashid Latif
08. Wasim Akram
09. Fazal Mahmood
10. Abdul Qadir
11. Waqar Younis

I thought that the ESPN ATG Pakistan side was short of a batsman.

Imran at 6 is too high for an ATG side.

As I said earlier at their pomp Imran, Wasim, and Waqar should be able to run through other ATG sides so bowling is not a concern.

I do expect Saeed Anwar to be poking at the line just outside off though :p

Some great players in that list but I dunno about leaving out both Younis and Yousuf. Would be tempted to pick either of them ahead of, say, Inzy.

The normal awards that everyone else has
Yousuf Youhana or Mohammed Yousuf at 6 is tricky to decide.

I'll always take a viable 5th bowler if there's one available, so Mushtaq Mohammed at 6... bearing in mind that these sides will be playing the other ATG sides in theory, some of which have pretty good batting line-ups! I think if you have a Steve Waugh / Wally Hammond type in your top order then you can get away with selecting four out-and-out bowlers as these guys can bowl 10-12 overs a day to reduce the workload on the main bowlers. When the best bowler around among the batsmen is likely to be Javed or Younis Khan, then I think you'll get found out.

OK getting a bit silly now, so any objections if I crunch the numbers and move on to the next round of voting?
