The India and Pakistan combined ATG Thread : Open Voting

First Class Debutant
4. Sachin Tendulkar.
5. Javed Miandad.
6. Imran Khan.

Could have picked one of Inzy, Abbas, Azhar or VVS to bat at sixth, but the temptation of having both Kapil and Imran, is just too good to resist.

Tendy, Miandad and Inzy.... By having both Imran and Kapil the batting will be weak for an all time IX.. if we had keeper like sangakkara I would have him at 6 as WK and Imran at 7 and 4 specialist bowlers (just to make room for Akhtar )

Having Imran or Kapil at 6 will severely weaken the batting imo. They were good batsmen but would you seriously want someone who averages in the 30s to come in at 6 in an AT XI?
IMO VVS is the perfect choice for No 6... he's a batsman who can both force the pace and get quick runs when the team needs to build on an already good score and has proven he can perform the rescue act with frightening regularity, far more than the other choices. A great No 6 needs to perform both these roles and VVS can do both admirably

It'd definitely a bit weird that I'd pick Kapil in a combined Subcontinent XI but not in a combined India/Pakistan XI, but cricket team balance is a prick like that.

I know what you mean. I'd have picked Kapil if we could have Sanga as the keeper to strengthen the batting. Since we'll end up having a relatively weak batsman at the keeper slot in an India/Pak XI, I'm omitting Kapil for Inzi. If anyone cares, here's my combined subcontinental XI:

Gavaskar
Hanif
Dravid
Tendulkar
Miandad
Sanga
Imran
Kapil
Wasim
Waqar
Murali

Mushtaq for the balance and fifth option assuming we will select 3 pacers and 1 spinner next. Also as it's a subcontinent ATG XI, captain can rely back to double prong spin attack if required. I wouldn't mind either of Mushtaq or Vinoo for that matter. With either of them, team isn't losing much on batting but rather gaining more balance in the process.

I completely agree.

Incidently, this performance by Mushtaq against Clive Lloyd's team in 1977 is superb and could only be achieved by a handful of individuals;

4th Test: West Indies v Pakistan at Port of Spain, Apr 1-6, 1977 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo

It was tempting to put Imran at No.6 because after batting 20 times in that position he averages 61.86 ! However, I still think that Imran is better suited to No.7 which seems a more natural place for him, and less likely to hyper-extend his talents.

yeah also I believe Imran will lead the attack and will be the captain. It'll be too much burden if he has to come at no 6.
