I do think that an interesting question has been posed, tbh. Not necessarily specific to Tendy/Lara, but a mate of mine loves debating **** so much that he would take whatever opinion is required at the time. Real-life trolling if you will. So it's not too much of a stretch to imagine people overstacking their opinion of a player/team/band/film to seem more balanced when arguing in favour of their actual favourite.

Probably does happen on here, actually. I'm serious.

It's all a ruse in preparation for me declaring Saj Mahmood the greatest bowler of all-time tbh

So far nothing in this thread has made sense to me....

This is actually something I've seen on basketball forums. It's pretty annoying and you can usually see right through it. I don't think it happens much around here though.

So, we've finally come to the point where we understand this thread:

Why do basketball forums exist and why do you go there?

Haha. Not a fan of the sport I presume. I love basketball, probably as much as limited overs cricket, and there's plenty to discuss like any sport, especially since it's so widespread.

Whether it is widespread is debatable......

Anyway, I stay up for speed skating. I guess we've all got our flaws.

Interesting thread. I'm guilty of this, or at least of things similar to it, and I suspect many others are too whether consciously or not (I'm speaking in general terms and not specifically to Lara / Sachin). Pretty straightforward rhetorical technique I think, to add weight to your opinion by giving it at least the appearance of balance. For instance if you want to lay into a Pakistani player who's been ball tampering, it doesn't hurt to mention in the same post an English ball-tamperer or another Pakistani player whom you hold in high regard. That way you're less likely to provoke a negative reaction and a tedious diversion of the thread either into tit-for-tat allegations against players from one's own team, or into allegations of bias.

Pretend they think that Lara is better than Tendulkar, just so they can fanboy Tendulkar and not be called out for bias on it?

Was speaking to an Indian friend of mine at Uni this morning, who basically alluded to this proposition. Was just wondering how much, if any, truth is behind it.

They are happy to contradict their own opinion because peer approval is more important than 'being right' over a relatively trivial matter. Better to blend in rather than disrupt a friendship.

I would argue that if your friend is going to get upset just because you choose to have a different opinion to them, then that particular friend is not worth having in the first place.

Lara is better than Tendulkar, and that's what matters.

(now I'm confused as to which I like the best)

I agree, Lara IS the better batsman. But why?

The technique of Tendulkar is classically orthodox. At the same time his personality is also orthodox. That is, focused, determined, and very measured without many emotional peaks and troughs.

Brian Lara is flamboyant in both technique and personality. He is not orthodox. This enables him to take risks and hence dominate the bowling when he is riding an emotional peak, and in form, at the same time.

Consequently, Lara is the better batsman because he can dominate the bowling and win a Test match for his team in ways that Tendulkar can only dream about.

Just on the Lara/Tendulkar thing.

I agree with Watson here. I'd say Tendulkar is the most perfectly orthodox batsman I've ever seen, and possibly that ever has been. He is the prototype for orthodoxy. That said, he's not boring to watch at all. I love watching him. Consistent.

Lara is brilliant and destructive, footwork is amazing and stroke play brilliant. He would be in my top 3 most preferred to watch batting. Enigmatic.

I'd prefer to see Lara score 100 over Sachin. Can't split them simply on the basis of watchability though. Both amazing. Waste of time trying to say one is better significantly. Happy that they played in the era they did.
