There is actually an argument to be made that Strauss is simply a middle of the road test batsman whose record is padded by his stellar first 12 months

All-round records | Test matches | Cricinfo Statsguru | ESPN Cricinfo

86 tests is a bloody big sample size

He has also cashed in against the poorer test attacks with Bangladesh, India New Zealand and West Indies being the only teams that he averages more than 40 against

Good post... but if you're going into pure stats, all sorts of interesting comparisons can be made, e.g. with ponting who is averaging 41 in his last 58 tests.. Strauss averaging 40.5 from his last 58. Even Collywobble averaged 41 in his last 58 tests. And that master batsman Vettori 38. Statsguru, the great equalizer. Lord Zaltzman will be pleased...

yes thank you for the stats. strauss is a gentleman and a decent captain but that cannot alone justify a place in the xi. players with a bit of ego and performance are obviously going to question his authority.

The ODI series begins today and I expect SA to struggle a bit. I don't think this our strongest side and it feels a bit weak in the middle order. England's middle order also looks a bit meek.

should be a closely fought series, may the best team win :D

Shame Bairstow can't get a game. Would happily dump Bell, Trott or Bopara given Bairstow's good form. Can't see the batting lineup changing either during the series. They won't drop Trott or Bell and Bopara is too important given he gives England a decent 6th bowling option

I think, as Bumble said, the fact Bairstow was warming up with the gloves is a clue as to where he's most likely to play later.

Doubt there'll be much play today.

As well as we've done recently, I'd be happy to see all of Bairstow, Taylor and Buttler in the team. Looks like an exciting middle order, and I'd say quite likely to appear at the next WC. Shame one of them can't bowl a bit.

Wales showing why it's had a lock on "The World's Worst Principality" award for several centuries.

Play due to start on 12.45, but seeing is believing.

Ha, yep. More rain. Honestly, what a ****hole.

3.30 the cut-off for play to start, apparently. Reckon we'll be lucky to see any cricket. Would Elgar be the first cricketer to "debut" in an ODI with no play possible? As there's been a toss, it counts, as one understands.

Nah surely if a ball isn't bowled it doesn't count as a match.

Surely.

Wiki (usual health warnings apply) seems to agree with me.

Wikipedia said:
The umpires call of play marks the official beginning of the match. If the match is abandoned at any time after the toss, it stands as a match played and enters official statistical records. If a match is abandoned before the toss, it is not considered to have been played at all, and does not count for records.

Yeah, a city on the coast with a couple of thousand miles of ocean to the side where the weather comes from isn't the best place to try to stage a cricket match at the back end of summer. DOH!

Might come down to a T20 farce.

I presume they just bowled that ball to avoid giving out refunds.

Should've made it a day-nighter, we wouldn't have lost much play at all. Are they all daytime games?

Bill Frindall disagreed so vehemently with the ICC's ruling that he refused to include such 'matches' in players' records in 'Playfair.'
