Whatever happened to Copeland?

Haha, what a bunch of semantics.

On the form of that season, yes, you probably would have. On the basis of their careers at FC level, probably not. Irrespective of citing one game as evidence for anything. There were plenty of games where MacGill bowled better than Warne when playing together, it didn't make him a better bowler (cue Benchmark00).
It does ftr.

Arthur said there were some bowlers who he felt were benefitting out of some very friendly Sheffied Shield wickets over the past few years. I think there's little doubt that Copeland was one of the guys he was referring to.
Yeh.

True or not (personally, there's some truth to it), the view is pervasive, persuasive and from Arthur, influential. For me, Copeland's biggest missing piece wasn't pace so much as seam.

Andre's rumours are interesting too. If there's one profession I'd have thought would require a bit more humility than most it's half-rat med purveyor.

I dunno if people just cbf mentioning it because he's so slow, but Copeland's elbow joint seems to do an awful lot of work, if you know what I mean.

That was so out. They should just look at the replays in those situations, definitely hitting off stump.

Re Copeland's action, he does bowl with a slightly bent elbow but it doesn't really straighten either (unlike someone like Murali), so I don't think you can call it a chuck.

Nah, don't really have a problem with it, it's similar to someone like Gillespie's but it just happens at a slower pace.

Lol. May have to steal that.

Cricinfo has him rather optimistically down as "fast-medium" tho. Was there a spot of "Praveen envy" about his call up? On the face of it Copeland's essentially an elongated version: no pace, hoops in round corners, bowls all day...

Nah, he'd just had a stupidly good year and a half in Shield cricket. And if it were "Praveen envy" you wouldn't be giving him his first game in the sub-continent, would you? Even if SL does provide a bit of swing.

Has anyone even seen Copeland hoop it around corners anyway? Always has come across as more of a seam bowler to me.

Praveen debuted in WI, didn't he? Even more of a graveyard for seam-up bowlers of late.

I meant more from Kumar slightly lifting the scales of prejudice from selectors' eyes about bowlers who lack pace being a serious proposition at test level. We've had a prime example over here in Mark Davies; great FC record, lethal when the conditions are conducive but always been thought of as too slow for tests. I reckon that if Kumar hadn't made a dcent fist of it the Aussie panal would've probably never given Copeland a go at all.

I've seen him swing it, but I would never have described it as going around corners. The old "just enough" type of thing.
