The ATG World XI's game

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
This side has a bit of a tail and a middle order that might be prone to collapse so I'll go for Jardine in case the batting needs a bit of steel and Boucher on the basis that when you get the rest of his team out that bastard always seems to come to the rescue

Ah, probably where you and I are different. I am certainly willing to vote for someone like Archie Jackson in the next round instead of Mahela (if it came to a one-on-one) because of his abundant natural talent. That natural talent is why I rate de Villiers so highly, amongst other things. His fielding, unorthodoxy and tempo changes also give him a huge boost for me.
Interesting. I mean what aspect of de Villiers game is unorthodox and how much value do you put into this? I agree that his fielding is top draw and he can attack and play defensively when its needed to. For mine AB was just chosen a little early as we have no idea what is going to happen for the remainder of his career.

I'm interested in knowing how you Jager rate Michael Slater. He was dropped from the Australian team averaging 47.41 which was a huge average for an opening bat at the time. His ability to smash the opening bowlers early on was legendary. If he had of converted even half of his 90s into 100s I think that he would have had an excellent case of already being included in this game. Of course he came back to the team, but was never the same batsman...

In other news, I'm thinking of calling this soon. We've had 16 voters, I doubt we will get many more..

Call it, I'd say. I think Slater was a superb batsman, as was Martyn. I am not a fan of Slater's personality at all though, which somewhat alters my perspective. I'd definitely be willing to pick him in the next few rounds though.

With AB, I mean that he uses unorthodox strokes such as the reverse sweep and paddle sweep, and is also efficient with the scoop shot, at least in one day matches (I am not sure if he has used it in test cricket, but I'd assume he has against rank spin bowling). His ability to strike at well over 100 runs per 100 deliveries means he can come in and run wild for half an hour before a declaration, which I like a lot.

I don't think he will ever get the opportunity to strike at over 100 against any of these other attacks though.

Keeper
Marsh 2
Waite 6

Stewart 4
Boucher 2

Number 6
Laxman 3
Hill 2
Jackson 3
Yousuf 1
Jardine 2
Richardson 1
Flintoff 3
Jayawardene 1

VVS Laxman, Stanley Jackson and Andrew Flintoff were all tied on 3 votes. I dismissed Flintoff quick enough as I figured that since both our openers could bowl, we needed a quality batsman in at 6 so it was just between Jackson and Laxman. Jackson seemed like a very special player, but Laxman is very, very special :).

That 281 that he produced was enormous and he has been a rock in crisis situations so often that I figure he deserves the spot narrowly ahead of Jackson.

Bowling votes
Willis- about time he qualified for a team, he's really too good to leave out now. Courageous, tall and very talented.
Flintoff- inspires the crowd, fantastic swing bowler and if he bats at eight, he will be an enormous boost to the side. I don't think he should be batting at six, so I am voting for him here.
Anderson- I've seen enough of him now to genuinely rate him this highly. Tough to leave McDermott out, but Jimmy has so much swing it's scary.

Opener votes
Anwar- glorious left-handed stylist.
Woodfull- one tough gentleman and his stunning first class record reflects what a batsman he was. Endured bodyline and maintained an excellent test average, too.

First drop vote[/U
Hill- narrowly squeezes out Archie Jackson, purely because he didn't make the shortlist and is therefore unlikely to win.

I may have forgotten someone, but not Archie Jackson as he never once batted at 3 in Test Cricket and I wanted this team to have someone who has.

BTW, I just felt like having a separate question for number 3's as its a completely different position to say number 5 and we usually lump them together. Not that its really needed, if you look at the first drops selected so far, they have all been absolutely world class.

Glad Gary Kirsten got chosen. I only just included him this round - it was an oversight, as he deserved it as much as some and more than others (Mark Richardson) who were picked earlier.

Whoops, I always thought that Jackson was a first drop batsman and that Bradman continued in his place after he died.

True, but why no Herbie Taylor on your list?

Michael Slater - Could take the attack to any opening bowler, a quality that could be of use when up against one of the higher ranked sides.
Bill Woodfull - The antithesis of Slater, he was renowned for his defense and technique, and the ability to grind out scores. I think these two would combine well.

Clem Hill - Hill was arguably the best batsman of his time, and was prolific in the days when an average of 30 was good for a top-order batsman.

Shane Bond - Fast, moves the ball, averages 20-ish. If he hadn't been so bloody injury prone, he would probably have been the second best pace bowler (behind McGrath) of the early to mid 2000s. And that's saying something given the quality of guys he was up against.
Fazal Mahmood - A stalwart of Pakistan's side in its early days, Mahmood was an incredible bowler at all levels and would run in all day. Held a weak Pakistan attack on his shoulders for a significant period of time.
Tom Richardson - His First Class record is incredible, especially considering he played on for about 6 years after his bowling started to go downhill. He was renowned for his pace and ability to bowl on flat decks and move the ball around dramatically. 88 wickets in 14 tests is an incredible return.

Would like to have Flintoff and Cairns in this side, provides some good balance and add in a spinner as well. Maybe Mankad if we go for two spinners.

Spofforth

Bill Johnston - A lefty who bowled pace and spin and the leading wicket taker for the invincibles. Would balance the attack quite nicely.

Woodfull
Haynes

Will go for Clem Hill again though Richie Rich and Boonie were also super no 3s.
