The more I think about it, the more I cannot fathom why they picked Nicol. Ellis is a hero in the Shield, but Nicol isn't great.

The leading runscorer, and Central Districts rescuer on occassion, is Kruger van Wyk. If they are truly selecting using the pie thing, how the hell does Nicol's whatevers outweigh 638 @ 91.14?
I think we've well and truly established that the 'pie thing' is a furphy and they just pick whoever they want, just like always.

No offense Rob but if you could be injured after this game (you're more than welcome to take 7fer first) that would be really cool because then I could campaign for Kruger or Skippy. Kthnx.

SA have played some lazy shots during this chase but they'll still beat a very disappointing kiwi outfit.

NAme a legitimate candidate other than nicol that is not from CD/does not have technique issues/has not been on the merry go round before/averages 40 in FC cricket over 3 or more seasons/has not been shown up in a ODI or looked inept against international bowling

I don't mean to say you can't name anyone - I would just like to hear some names.

Find Nicol's name on this list.

Cricket Records | Records | Plunket Shield, 2011/12 | Most runs | ESPN Cricinfo

Banning me from picking CD players isn't fair.:( Well statistically based purely on form the numbers say Brodie. Never seen him though, so I dunno. Has a few fans on the forums, but then so does Franklin.

edit: gonna go for the guy with 256 @ 51.20. Guess who?

edit 2: haven't used enough  smileys

Good post. He didn't have a great season, Brodie, last season, so maybe his next step is an A team tour.

Enjoyed the Munro reference!

Good news for the kiwi test prospects - Chris Martin is in top batting form. (Made 6 n.o for Auckland in his latest innings...)

God, that was depressing today. One of the most depressing games I have ever witnessed.
Yep, given SA played 7 bowlers and 4 batsman, it was embarrassing. Well played the Jaaps of course, but we were nine shades of shizenhausen the entire series and the selection policy has me flummoxed.

We left around the 15 over mark of the SA chase. NZ already looked a beaten side. Although, the fact that it was damn cold also had something to do with it. Sitting in the terraces with that damn wind blowing all around was a throw-back to winter. Our batting effort had me a little flummoxed: some soft dismissals and crazy runs.

If the pitch is anything like a good cricket wicket with a bit of pace then NZ are liable to get thoroughly outclassed by South Africa at the best of times. But without Vettori, Taylor and Ryder as well... seriously what were people expecting? South Africa love to bully weak sides so it's not like they were going to turn up, play rubbish and make a game of it.

Fair call. New Zealand are also missing Styris and Oram from the team that won the quarter final. Given that New Zealand replaced them with Nicol, Franklin, CdG, Ellis and Bates this was always going to be one sided. Makes a mockery of all the commentators who were crowing about the new found depth of New Zealand cricket.

Is it not too late to recall Daniel Flynn?

I mean he can at least get to forty and he's coming off a hundred in the Shield so he might even break into the mighty fifties.
