***Official*** Tendulkar vs Ponting Thread

Exactly. It seems Ponting isn't recovering from his slump. 4 years and counting. And his slump is worse than at least 2 of those you mentioned if not all 3. The other 3 all played/playing at the level that they did before the slumps. Ponting isn't. If anything Ponting can be compared to Botham now
and lara's slump lasted even after his aus series so the cool thing is he played his greatest cricket right in the middle of his slump immediately after his lowest point as a cricketer, captain and batsman. 2 match probation or something like that and then 213, 8 153*, 100. Talk about under pressure too, booed on and all that! Lara <3

what's your point?
that i <3 lara.

and that the other players managed to put out some superb performances even in the midst of their slumps. even sachin had some consecutive innings where he scored some giant scores in australia and pakistan.

just saying I know ponting made runs against pakistan but how long as it been since he scored a 100 even? i really do still rate him highly but not at the top tier anymore.

Haha. Good to see you Ikki. You should be here when Ricky fades away in the next few weeks.

And... Richards could afford to average less than Lara since he batted in a tougher era. Otoh, if Ricky ends at 52 in these batter friendly times then I could be wrong in my prediction; history may actually rate him below javed. ;)

There's a difference between Ricky and other greats in his era - he didn't plump his average with minnows so his average is still (even with this long trough) great. Remove Tendulkar's matches against B/Z and he averages 53. Back in 07, Tendulkar's average hit 51 (without minnows) and Ponting was closing on 60. Not only did people not say that Tendulkar was inferior (I remember the arguments :p), but no one was saying he had dropped to Miandad's level. ;)

true. he should have retired then. unfortunately people pumped him up unnecessarily - like saying he could overtake tendulkar if he played long enough. poor guy believed the hype, got greedy, played for too long and has lost the race badly in the long run. javed is an all time great too. ponting would happily settle for that status in history. not everyone can be a richards, tendulkar, lara or hutton you see! ;)

Ponting is a prime example of how much people underrate longevity. When comparing one player averaging 60 for 8 years to a player averaging 52 for 15 years, people don't even blink before suggesting the former has clearly had the better career. In this forum, I got laughed at many a times when during Ponting's prime I opined that he was yet to surpass Steve Waugh. Now, I silently observe that some of the same posters keep him at par with Waugh.

The reason people under value longevity is more a case of how most people have short term memory and are basically dumb. The same people who were hailing Ponting when he was averaging 60 and laughing at you when you said he hadn't surpassed Waugh were doing so because they didn't remember Waugh's feats in the 90s. Similarly the people calling for Ponting's head now no longer remember that Ponting averaged 60 at one point.

i don't think anyone believes ponting isn't better than waugh at batting
I don't think so. If a 'Waugh vs Ponting as test batsmen' thread is created today, Waugh will get at least 20% of the votes I think. I personally would want him to get more than 50% votes, but that's a different story.
