Yep. So I guess that's the Cape Town first dig batting order with the possible exception of who else opens.

How is Rahane placed amongst Indian followers? Admittedly I don't follow much Indian cricket, but from the little I've seen of him in t20 and OD cricket he looks a pretty elegant batsmen with some deft touch. Kind of curious to see him play in the longer format given his FC record, which is franky just absurd. It's currently the 4th highest FC average ever.

There have been many weird selections recently,
The selectors were having a lot of faith in Mukund even though Rahane was performing much better in the FC games, no doubt Mukund has the potential, but him being selected ahead of Rahane didn't make sense at all.
RP Singh was selected for the England tour despite of not playing FC cricket for around 6 months,
S Aravind getting selected out of nowhere,
Unadkat for SA tour before the WC, he isn't even as good as Mithun,
Piyush Chawla in the WC squad, he wasn't getting selected in the ODI squads at that time and all of a sudden he was selected ahead of the other players that were tried before the WC,
and Mithun is the latest example of the stupidity which is going on.

Yeah agree with all of that.

You couldn't have picked Kohli for England after his horrid WI series, and Yuvraj shouldn't have even been in the mix. With Pujara injured that only left Raina really, as Rahane was too far away and you don't debut an Indian batsmen in England.
True, but somehow after being a unplayed reserve in West Indies for tests, Badrinath was dropped from the squad for England and Yuvraj selected out of nowhere.

After a Epic FC season last time, Badrinath didn't get a chance based on ODI's.

He can hook and pull too, which would've been useful on this tour.
He is actually in the squad, but as a reserve opener it seems which i am yet to be convinced about as he has always been a number 3/4 player.

Mukund's selection was pretty fair. Rahane hasn't been a opener much at all at FC level, while Mukund has always been.

Jeez that is disappointing. Stress fracture-type injury.

So the injured fast bowlers list is something like:

Harris
Cummins
Watson
Johnson
Dougeh

of those in contention. There are a few other important NSW ones too.

Fast bowlers falling like Nine pins for both teams, even before the series starts.

And Mark Cameron. Not that he would have been in contention, but he should have been.

Was Bollinger seriously in contention?

Surely his non-selection for any Test squad since Adelaide despite being a regular in the ODI side when fit is indicative of where he stands in the pecking order?

I think they just wanted him to prove his fitness more long-term. I reckon he would've been picked for this Test just gone against New Zealand if he didn't get injured; he's probably boned for good now though.

So is there any chance Ponting won't play Boxing Day?

Don't see it myself. Clarke for one will fight for his inclusion with tooth and claw if need be.
more chance of hussey being dropped imo. a few failures in a row and he's looked dog awful against spin late.

and more chance of josh lalor playing than either getting dropped

Unbelievable if you consider the series that Hussey had in SL. It would be a travesty if he is dropped before Ponting, who for all the talks about his rejuvenation is still to score a century in 2 years.

Good thing for India that Cummins is out. Could see him ripping through our much vaunted batting order.

he's also 36 and some might say has been lucky enough as it was. And he hasn't captained Australia in tests. It'll hardly be a surprise to see him not given as much time this time. particularly if as noted he contiunes to be dog **** against spin. jesus christ man use your feet. i wouldn't drop him before ponting. but i wouldn't've dropped katich before either.

ftr i don't think ponting has rejuvenated much if at all. he's just back to where's he been for most of the past two years - throwing away starts.

Haha, when the others in the list are all injured, you'd like to think he is in contention, or at least should be.

Virat Kohli (c)
That's shattering news. Would have liked to see him in action against Dravid and Sachin. Would have made good viewing.
