Australian Domestic Season 2011-12

I guess they figured given how often Usman/Hughes/Smith aren't available at their already young ages there's no point giving it to them. But in any chance Katich, Hauritz and Moises (if he plays. I guess he won't now.) will be playing and have also captained NSW and Jaques the 2nd XI so why not them? This is just absurd. I can't get my head around all this at all. I was excited to see the teams we pick but now I'm fearing it.
Yeah I'd forgot Haurie did the job once last year too. The not being available later surely can't be the reason. It's for one week FFS and surely the Blues selectors believe SOK will play more than the odd T20 game for Australia. Plenty of potential candidates available but they've come up with a guy who would only be more of a surprise than Maddinson, Haze and Starc. If you'd asked me before the announcement I'd even have had Nevil and Copes in front of Ben. Like Robelinda says, he'd be please to be just getting a game. Hope he goes brilliantly, and uses the senior brains around the side when required, but it's straight outta left field.

Actually reckon the choice of O'Keefe is a bit of a stranger one than Rohrer for the captaincy gig to be honest.

Hypothetically, what happens when NSW come up in conditions to only take 1 spinner? Can we be sure that O'Keefe is a better bet than Hauritz? (Who we'd assume isn't really going to be around the national set-up too much).

Lot of things to like about Rohrer as a leader, a more mature bloke and will more than likely be picked for every game in all 3 forms of cricket but certainly not taken away by the national squad. Captains like that have served NSW well in the recent-ish past (Emery, Haddin, S Lee, Thornely). So I can sort of get my head around that one, sort of.

O'Keefe has really struck me as an out of the blue pick though. Apparently he's captained us in the past but I can't think of when - I can remember Henriques doing it a few times as a stop-gap-stop-gap but others fail me.

Anyway, interesting side note: GRJ Matthews was the last spin-bowling all-rounder to captain NSW regularly.

PS: Anyone else thinking that the decision re: Katich might hint he won't play much one day cricket this summer?

Both are really, really strange. As you say if it comes down to picking one spinner at some time I'm leaning towards Hauritz and Henriques being the all-rounder. But obviously NSW think different....or they're not focusing on silverware. It just really limits us the same way Clark at times limited us last season - when we were trying to fit Copeland, Dougeh, SOK, Cameron and Hauritz in the same team - and I'm pretty sure Henriques' stint as captain did the same...although Henriques had to open the bowling at times iirc so maybe it didn't. (Main thing I remember about Heniques' captaincy is using Aaron Bird in horridious fashion in a bigbash match against vic tbh. used him near the death ffs!)

But yeah I just really can't understand this move. Why the rush? Next season would have been fine. SOK will have captained the SCG BigBash team - I think Haddin is the official captain so- and got some exp and as you say if Katich wasn't focusing on ODers he could have captained us there this season. But going all the way and putting him in charge of the Shield is just absurd. Almost as bad as Nathan Adcock! Well it's nowhere near as bad but still.

As for Rohrer, well it's just I wouldn't pick him for the these matches against SA let alone make him captain. That's not to say over the season he wouldn't be a good deputy, but right now when we've got Hughes with us I just feel he's the unlucky batsman.

O'Keefe has really struck me as an out of the blue pick though. Apparently he's captained us in the past but I can't think of when - I can remember Henriques doing it a few times as a stop-gap-stop-gap but others fail me.

I remember at the time I thought it was strange considering he'd barely established himself in the team. I'm not 100% he has captained us in a Shield/OD match though. I'm pretty sure sometime last season we selected him to captain in one of those matches but I have a feeling he missed the game through injury. (With Hauritz then taking charge?)

Yeah weird stuff. They must be really taking the slow road with Haze to make sure he's 100%. Would surely be a cert for the Shield otherwise. As for Moz/Abbott it looks to me that both could play and Jaques could be unlucky. Crazy talk I know, but we don't have a 5th bowling option unless Kat is happy to have a bowl. It certainly looks like either Jaques or Kat will miss the OD game as there are only 5 bowlers named.

Well done Voges!

Anyone else watching the live stream? Johnson just got out Kruger edging, was a good delivery.

Johnson vs. Ponting now!

First ball Ponting pulls him for 4 (presumably).

EDIT again - Mitch is bowling very well. Gets Cowan edging to third slip, no footwork involved but a fairly typical WACA dismissal.

Love watching Bailey...
