To put it simply, he's a victim of age bias. Too often, better players are sidelined for younger tykes. That's manufactured a crisis in Indian spin stocks. Here's one bloke who's a fantastic performer not just in India, but also over some time in England, but they leave him out for weird reasons. Ganguly wasn't much of a factor in deciding selections once he retired, so we can largely put it down to age quota, although Dhoni has practically never backed him either.
Chawla's got a lot of games, but needs a little refinement. I mentioned the age quota, so he's benefited a little, but there are doubts about his age as well.

Rest of India win by 404 runs. Old news, and it happened before the CLT20 game began. Ojha took three more wickets. He seems to be doing fairly well in this star-shorn domestic league, but with the stars not likely to turn up in full for the event, he'll learn more when he plays in leagues in England, SA and NZ. The BCCI should think about this and also send Ashwin, Iqbal as well as some seam bowlers for these leagues- after all, not all overseas league cricket is T20!
Vinay Kumar, though, bowled very well, but the figures don't reflect it. He kept it very tight, gave little room to the batsmen and looked more threatening than the Aaron-Yadav pair, who seem to have lost a lot of pace over five days. Yadav, though, thudded the ball in earlier today, and took a good wicket of Kanitkar, though the next wicket he got was a swipe outside off- Meenaria edged to Patel. While Patel had three dismissals today, his wicketkeeping was still rather poor- far from first-choice, and questionable if even good enough as a reserve.
Take the ROI result with a pinch of salt. They bowled Raj out twice in five days, with five bowlers. They had the sheer weight of runs aiding them. Rajasthan were hamstrung without Pankaj Singh and their batting lacks refinement- only Chopra and Meenaria are much good, while the rest are average.

Confused about Yadav's true pace. I remember seeing him crack 140kph regularly in one game and hover around 120-125 in another.
He's decently built, would be more threatening if he was taller. Respect to him though, he only picked up cricket when he was 19 years old. Just four years in and he's amongst the top Indian pace bowlers.

Good assessment. My pecking order remains unchanged even after this match. Vinay Kumar, Umesh Yadav, ........... Aaron and .................... Chahar it was and it remains that way. No substitute for f/c experience. Can't just throw a young promising speedster into international cricket to hone his bowling skills; it's a rather ruthless learning arena.

Yeah, Unmukt Chand is dominating with the bat. One to watch out for sure.
And with the ball Baba Aparajith is having a terrific series, while Sandeep Sharma has been pretty good too.

The Challenger Trophy begins in half an hour. Watch it for your favourite players, but don't expect anything sensible to come out of it for national selection. If the current players are doing well or a fringe player does well, it's fine, but it's not good for an India selection, especially for an out-of-the-blue success. It should have been a workout for the Indian main team, but it's become a selection shoot-out.
Then there's this murky controversy about Kumble's Tenvic Inc supporting Vinay Kumar and Aravind. Dreadful. He's not supporting these two because of Karnataka or Tenvic. He's supporting them because they're good at what they do, and good for India. We've seen utter rubbish selections for pace- barely a season or two old, and they're in, and the age bias is strong. Kumble, at the very least, has supported deserving players, and he should be applauded for that.
I'd have Vinay Kumar opening the ODI bowling and Aravind for T20Is over that Aaron-Yadav-Unadkat-Dinda-Mithun-Tyagi-Munaf-Sreesanth nonsense.

On challenger trophy, I dont care who wins this, I just want whoever has been selected for the ODI series to perform better. I would also be watching this to see how the rules of two new balls and powerplay pans out.

RP Singh bowling utter rubbish and Unadkat slightly lucky. Pankaj, though, has done well coming in early first-change. Bharghav Bhatt has been tight in his first two overs. Valthaty is on top now, but he's been flailing away like it's a flat-deck T20 match, and going for one shot too many. Vijay is taking the comfort of the non-striker's end.

Three down. Valthaty is run out, Vijay plays a poor shot to hole out to backward point off Pankaj Singh, while Dinesh Karthik ran riot in a Chawla over before Chawla bowled him round the legs. The Pandey-Badri pair is making good runs, while seamers are still tonked around.
As of now (5:19pm), more than a few poor strokes yielded two wickets. Bharghav Bhatt has gained largely. As O@P mentioned earlier, he's just bowling flat and making the most of waning patience of the batsmen.

A rush of wickets fell, but now Sangwan hits Unadkat for fourteen runs in the final over. Unadkat has gone for a golden jubilee despite not completing ten overs. Pankaj Singh went for more than a few, but earned his two wickets. Before that, Mandeep scored a rapid, T20-esque 50, with lots of innovative strokes.
This total of 274 is not just a challenge, but a match-winning total. India Red have a very flimsy batting order.

Surely this would have been the perfect game for Yadav and Aaron to get some match practice in. Also depressing that by what I've read, Sangwan was the only one to cross 130kph with consistency. Fair enough that Pathan is coming back from injury but the likes of Pankaj Singh and Unadkat will surely never be prospects at 125kph. Unless you are a master of variation like Mascharanas, Harvey or Hollioake, I do not think there is a place for someone in the ODI game at 125kph unless they are something special.
India do have bowlers who bowl consistently over 130kph and this should be the reduced pool from who we select. The likes of Shami Ahmed has barely played domestic cricket but timed at 141kph in the IPL - maybe we should be looking for people like him.
I do hate to be the one to disregard domestic records but you are quite simply not an ODI prospect as a specialist bowler if you bowl no more than 125kph.
