I think the fact that Ashwin has this sort of batting talent (and has shown it domestically) was kind of his point though. What he'd shown in international cricket thus far completely belied his ability as he was batting without a brain.

Yeah but because he's of reasonable pace (unlike other new ball specialists), England have never really tried to get all his overs out of the way early. He often comes back at the death and gets hammered and they keep thinking he'll be fine because there's no completely obvious reason why he isn't. I don't know if the two new balls will make them re-think that or just go with the "it'll still be swinging in the 45th over now!" mentality and still bowl the guy at the death.
