1st ODI vs Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe won the toss and batted first on a flat wicket.

Playing XI: Narang, REMOVED, Ballich, Spark, Dharan, Clark, Ikram, Winne, Noble, Dean, Dong.

For the first time on tour the Zimbabweans put together a solid opening partnership, and with both openers going well against the seamers, reached 50/0 after the first 10. The stand was broken by Dean when Mutyambizi fell for 33 in the 13th over.

His opening partner Vermeulan continued on serenly, and reached his 50 from a run a ball. The hundred came up in the 19th over, though Dean continued to hold things back by trapping Ewing lbw.

At the half way point the score had reached 130/3, Dong coming back for a middle overs burst and getting Strydom to nick behind for 10. Vermeulan was the key wicket though, and by this point had 75 from 77 balls. That became 93 from 95 balls by the time the next wicket fell (Soma bowled by Dean for 10); but the opener missed out on his century as Ikram bowled him in the 32nd over. At 165/5, however, he had still got his side into a good position.

Dean signed off with a maiden over and finished with 3-41 from his 10, and Ferreira was lbe to Noble for a disappointing 19 off 30 balls. It was left to Streak (24 off 35) and Brent (20 off 36) to push the score past 200, but as they did so Dong and Noble bowled well at the death to keep the scoring down. The last 6 overs went for 3 wickets and just 12 runs, and Zimbabwe finished on 229/9.

The CWers' innings did not start well as Narang departed for 11 off the same number of balls, while REMOVED was still yet to get of the mark. REMOVED was bowled by Rainsford for
15 off 36, and so CW relied on a much more positive effort from Dharan to get their start on track. The wicketkeeper managed 47 from 46 before being run out by a brilliant piece of fielding from Streak, and so at the 20-over mark the match was well balanced at 87/3.

The match began to turn against the home side when Spark was lbw to Rainsford for 1, and Clark could only manage 2 off 12 balls before departing. Ballich at this point had been stuck in a rut with his 11 from 40 balls, and the chase looked bleak at 104/5 after 27.

Ballich and Ikram's partnership led the fightback, with 85 in 18 overs from there. Ballich had reached his 50 off 99 balls, but the latter 39 had come off 49. CW needed 45 runs from the last 5, with 5 wickets in hand. Ikram reached his 50 (from 61) the following over with a cover-drive for four, and now the equation was 32 off the final four overs.

Ikram was run out off the next ball, but it was to be Winne that got the hosts over the line. Cool-minded rotation from Ballich (70* off 110) along with a dose of hefty striking from Winne (20* off 12) saw CW home with just three balls remaining.

Whatever it takes!!!
nice effort from myself there and a good win, albeit too close for comfort.. We really should be beating Zim with a lot less effort :(

2nd ODI vs Zimbabwe

CW brought in Hing and Phlegm for Winne and Dean, as Zimbabwe put the hosts in to bat.

A steady opening partnership from the CW reached 43 when REMOVED edged an outswinger from Panyangara to slip. From there, Dharan and Narang began to increase the rate, and by the 21st over had got the score to 97 when Narang was lbw, just missing out on his 50.

Ballich went soon after as he was leg before to Streak for a three-ball duck. Spark however hit his first delivery for four, and he and Dharan we able to put CW into a strong position. Dharan raised his fifty from 48 balls and Spark's came from 61, and the pair's hundred partnership took only 16 overs. The score was 207/3 going into the final 10.

Dharan's 74 off 73 was ended the next delivery when he holed out to long on, and Clark smashed two fours for his first two balls but was gone for the third, cutting straight to point to end an eventful 8 off 3.

Ikram stayed with Spark until the end of the innings, and the pair were able to smash 74 runs from the final eight overs, with Hondo and Streak the bowlers to suffer for it. Spark finished with an important but relatively sedate 83* off 90, while Ikram registered a powerful 46* from 38. The total was 291/5.

Phlegm got into the Zimbabwean top order straight away as dangerman Vermeulan hooked his second ball straight to deep backward square. Mutyambizi was caught at slip and in the tenth over Phlegm took out Ewing's off stump to complete an opening spell of 5-0-20-3.

Clark replaced him and immediately broke through, clipping Rogers' bails off to dismiss him for 14. At 47/4 in the 12th over the game was almost up already, but a 50 partnership between Strydom and Ferreira gave the away fans hope.

The spinners were brought on to finish things off, and Ikram got the breakthrough when Ferreira was caught bad-pad for a run a ball 36. Hing's spell was a strange one. He started with a maiden, followed by two overs that were dispatched for 26 by Ferreira. After Ikram broke the partnership, Hing's fourth over went for one run and gave him the key wicket of Strydom, before his last two overs went for 18.

Nonetheless when Ikram had Brent trapped lbw in the 24th over, Zimbabwe had fallen to 113/7. The game was more or less over and only Streak, with 38 from 32 balls, showed much resistance. When Ikram and Clark went through the tail - Ikram finishing with four wickets to go with his 48 runs - Zimbabwe were left with 164 all out, and another series loss.

CW won by 127 runs

3rd ODI vs Zimbabwe

With a series win possible, CW elected to bowl first. Bharani Dharan missed his first match for CW with a virus, and so Michael Spark took the gloves. Riley returned to the middle order and Winne came in for Dong.

Winne broke the opening stand, worth 45, in the 10th opener. Mutyambizi departed for 11, much to the relief of REMOVED, who had dropped him on 3. Ewing made 18 while seeing off the pace attack, but edged hit Hing straight to square leg in the 18th. Zimbabwe had reached 70/2, with Vermeulan the main threat on 36* from 50.

The 20th over saw Vermeulan smash three boundaries off Hing, but for the last ball was caught in the deep, having made 49 of Zimbabwe's 89/3. Rogers tried a paddle sweep to Ikram's third delivery and top edged it to Ballich, before Strydom and Marumisa began to make steady progress for the fifth wicket. The pair put on 64 in 16 overs before Hing got Marumisa (20 off 39) out bowled.

Strydom brough up his 50 in the next over, but in the same over was dismissed by a leading edge off Winne. He had made 53 off 71, but Zimbabwe were in a shaky position at 175/6 after 40. Hing finished his spell with a 2-run over, and ended with 3-43. It was left up to the tail to push Zimbabwe past 200.

Phlegm signed off with an excellent final spell off 4-0-11-2 at the death, including the key wickets of Ferreira and Streak. Noble was less successful, as the 46th and 48th overs went for 11 and 13 runs respectively. He came back well, though, to get both Brent and Panyangara in the 50th and finish the innings one ball early. Zimbabwe's total was 230 all out.

Narang (23 off 42) and REMOVED (37 off 57) gave CW a healthy but overly cautious start, and by the time REMOVED was lbw to Rainsford, Ballich's 7* from 21 had the CWers behind the rate. They were 74/2 after 20.

Riley brought up the 100 but immediately departed in the 24th for a run-a-ball 16. That was when the urgency kicked in, and over the next 16 overs Ballich and Spark put on 83, Ballich brining up his 50 from 69 balls. Finally CW began to look comfortable, only needing 48 from the final 10 with 7 wickets in hand.

Spark was lbw to Streak from 38, and three overs later Ballich was bowled for what turned out to be a well-paced 73 from 86. Nerves began to creep back in when Clark was bowled for 10 in the 46th - suddenly only four wickets and four overs remained for the hosts to get the remaining 22.

However, Ikram and Winne kept their cool to guide CW over the line to a series win.

CW won by 4 wickets

4th ODI vs Zimbabwe

Jake Howe came in for Devon Clark for the first of the two dead rubbers. The visitors elected to bat first.

Phlegm bowled his first three overs for just four runs but Howe got the initial breakthrough, taking a caught and bowled to dismiss Vermeulan. Ewing fell for a six-ball duck when he was lbw to Noble's second ball, and Winne bowled a maiden for his first over. The away side had progressed to a meek 42/2 after 15 overs.

Rogers was stuck on 9 from 31 balls when he decided to attack Hing, hitting two consecutive boundaries in the left armer's first over. Hing got him in his second, beating Rogers in the flight to have him stumped for 17. It was a relieving effort from part-time gloveman Spark, on a day when only three Zimbabweans outscored "byes". One of them, Mutyambizi with 32 from 54, departed two balls later when he mis-hit a sweep to square leg.

Zimbabwe were up against it at 67/4 after 20, but the innings only went from bad to worse for them. Strydom clipped Winne straight to mid on to end a painful 9 from 21 balls, and Ferreira did the same to give Hing his third wicket. The runs had completely dried up, and when Winne bowled a wicket maiden for the 30th (Streak lbw) the score had limped to 87/7.

Winne claimed his third wicket as Brent was lbw, and Hing closed his spell having only conceded 18 runs. Howe was brought back for his second spell and finally ended Marumisa's stay - an utterly tortured 8 from 64 - and Winne ended proceedings when Rainsford was caught at slip. The allrounder finished with 4 wickets for 10 runs, and Zimbabwe were dismissed for just 97.

CW's openers were never going to be challenged by the target and it was just a matter of seeing whether or not they could make it to the target without loss. Narang failed to get there, his sedate 20 off 41 being ended when he edged a Brent outswinger to slip.

Instead, the reply was built on a powerful 50 from REMOVED, the left-hander belying his tentative record with a 36-ball half century. Ballich hit the final runs of the day with a four straight down the ground, and CW continued on their way to whitewash.

CW won by 9 wickets

MotM - Robert Hing
