England. Respect.

Congrats to England... well deserved... They have outplayed India... can rightly claim to be the #1 team now.

I keep reading, admittedly mostly in comments to articles, that England cannot really be considered number one until they win in India. IIRC, India have never in their Test history won a series in Australia or South Africa so, by that logic, how could they ever have even been number one to demand that they lose it on their own territory?

Fair point.

My quid is that, after winning in Oz, SA were all set to be the #1 test side but the waters were muddied after losing the home rubber to the crims just afterwards.

India sort of emerged as a first amongst equals in the ensuing interregnum, mainly by virtue of their home form and some plucky away drawn series, but were never the undisputed #1 like the Windies or Australia have been.

I'd say England need to beat SA to be considered the real #1 rather than winning in India. If we avoid defeat in the winter and defeat them in the (sadly truncated) series in 2012 I think we'll be the undisputed champs.

And why is that? A team need not win in specific so and so conditions to be considered #1. India was a deserved #1(not 'sort of') till now and England is a deserved #1 now.
I do agree with the undisputed #1 part though. No team can be considered invincible yet. Not even the current English team.

Because we've beaten everyone else over the last 2-3 years; SA not since 04/05. Home or away.

beating SA at home will make you undisputed/real no.1?
noooo!
a drawn series in india after that surely will though imo

I think the way the current series has gone has shown which is the better side, tbh.

1-0 or 2-1 and I might have been concerned about the need to prove it by beating India at home, but nah. I don't think there's any argument that it's a necessity now. The great Oz team famously had problems beating India in India and no-one said they weren't the clear #1.

Drawing away and winning/drawing home is enough imo. As long as you don't lose it's fine imo.

You do realize the india won't surrender at home (pretty much gave up after 7 days into this series). almost all of the current batsmen will probably still be around for revenge. they'll be up for it!!
This series england have been using the the older duke balls that have been swinging more in overcast skies and have prepared tracks with more grass... so conditons have been PERFECT for them!!

Over there conditons will be completely the opposite (high temperatures, no cloud cover, little swing, low bounce, dead tracks etc) so the same fast bowlers who are looking godly right now may look pretty ordinary... and if the indian curators prepare reasonably spin friendly tracks england's batsmen could struggle too...

actually before all this england have to play in uae, sl. If they do really well there then losing to india won't really matter after a series win against SA.

If we beat them and the Windies next summer I think it gives us a full sweep of series wins at home against all Test outfits.

We are number 1 and have got there by being better than the rest. South Africa couldn't beat India and we have demolished them. We will beat South Africa next summer and I can see us first winning against Pakistan, Sri Lanka and West Indies before we go to India which may be a hard series but even if we lose there we will still be well ahead of India in the rankings by that stage.

Only team to knock us off the top in the next year or so is South Africa. India have very little chance as they just don't have the bowlers.

1 year is a long time. everything can change in a year.
broad and cook are a fine example. one moment they were pathetic and the next godly...

This time last year Broad had a very good series against Pakistan. Such is the depth of the England side we can carry a player or 2, we are at the moment with Morgan and Bopara and doing ok.
