Most charismatic cricketer ever?

Ability and charisma aren't the same thing. There are no boxes to tick when it comes to defining the level of charisma that a particular player holds.
I agree, I thought after reading some of the comments, especially 8ankitj's comments, that for all these years, I had the wrong understanding of what Charismatic means, turns out I haven't and some people are making it mean what they want.

of course charisma and cricketing ability are not the same thing but as Zaremba mentions that for a cricketer there is some overlap

Will have to agree with Ankit that in the SC at least Flintoff is not really known for having charisma.

Regarding his IPL contract being very expensive not sure but it could have been to attract audiences from England and Australia to tune in maybe.

Flintoff not even in my top 50 charismatic cricketers. Ashes ≠ Cricket.
Well good for you, but he would be in plenty of other peoples, from all over the world, What's with the 'Ashes ≠ Cricket.', we are talking about the charisma of Flintoff the man, which is what the topic is all about isn't it. People like him imo not just because of what kind of player he was but also because he was a very likeable, down to earth guy, that didn't let all the celebrity rubbish go to his head and would always chat to fans.
I went to watch England play in India, in 2006 and it took me back at how much the Indian fans loved Freddie, i thought before hand, that they would be just wrapped up in their own heroes, but no they liked Freddie a lot.

If one followed Ashes 2005 and Test cricket generally in the 2003-2005 period, it's hard to have missed Flintoff's presence.

IPL wasn't available on TV in the UK in the first few years.

It might not have been available on TV but it would have kept some of the people following it somewhat in other media maybe? I am not saying that this is the reason for sure but I am only speculating.

Still not too sure about too many Flintoff fans in India. Ankit or vcs might know better about that. I can tell you about Pakistan for sure.

I think it's about time we understand that if a player isn't 'popular' in the SC he therefore doesn't have charisma and has a personality as interesting as a cardboard box.

And I guess it is time for some people to step out of their Anglo-Australian centric views of the universe and realize that not every Tom, Dick, and Harry coming from that region has an automatic claim to charm, charisma, and all the good qualities that humans can possess.

8-) Yeah because I've clearly argued that every old mate is charismatic. Some basic reading comprehension would help.

Just because Flintoff wasn't widely popular or revered in the SC doesn't mean he wasn't charismatic even if it didn't extend to all corners of the cricketing world. It's almost ridiculous to suggest otherwise, and I think he's a dick.

Another silly statement.......8-)

dude charisma is not supposed to be an objective. There is lots of subjectivity.

A fair chunk of people would have found Osama bin Laden quite charismatic. Does that mean that everybody found him charismatic?????

Are you turning into an idiot overnight? Just a few posts ago I said

"There are no boxes to tick when it comes to defining the level of charisma that a particular player holds"

And I've followed this up by saying that although he may not have been popular in the SC it's illogical to assume he had no charisma whatsoever just because his influence didn't stretch into all corners of the cricketing globe. It can still be based upon what he achieved elsewhere

Don't wish to comment on your example of OBL specifically, but there's no doubt that many somewhat 'evil' leaders were charismatic. You have to be.

Yup. TYheres no shame in admitting that evil guys pretty much have to be charismatic if they want to get people to follow them. Hitler was pretty much the most powerful and charismatic speaker ever, even with the toothbrush moustache and all

Nature. Learned men like Freud, Breur and Eric Berne would tell you that people are most likely to find those athletes charismatic to whom they can relate on more levels than one. Black kids in the USA are particularly crazy about the Williams sisters, for instance.

Ethnicity, nationality and background have a significant bearing in relating to a person - celebrity or otherwise.

hang on
