Most charismatic cricketer ever?

The Tiger King
Haha, Smali if Bhupinder Singh was still allowed to post, there would be some serious competition between him and you over the title of Imran's greatest admirer. :)
Quoting PEWS here "I actually agreed with a lot of what Bhupinder Singh said regarding Imran"..........

I would agree...........

Incidentally PEWS is probably the only person on this forum who rates Imran higher than me or Bhupinder :p

According to PEWS "Imran was the greatest cricketer ever to play the game bar none"

Subjective again! And I'd disagree with both. Had that ruggedly handsome look. Craig White or Russel Crowe could be other examples!

Hansie Cronje:

Monobrowed ****.

Dishy as ****.

Not even close to being in the same ballpark. In fact, Russell Crowe is at first base, while Cronje is still outside looking for a carpark in his 1980s Corolla hatchback.

His batting was dogged and his bowling quite useful. He summed up the side of which he was the leader - where everyone (except Donald) could bat well and more than 6 or 7 could bowl!

It was a side of underdogs finding their way back into international cricket and how well they did that! As a leader of that side, I thought that he had a lot of flair. What happened post 1999-2000 is different, but I'm not exaggerating when I say that most 90s cricket-lovers were really fond of Cronje.
Oh really? Guess what? I was a 1990s cricket lover and I wasn't fond of him at all. And dogged batting and "quite useful" bowling does not a charismatic cricketer make.

Again that's a subjective assessment. You need to talk with a few South African kids who grew up in the 90s to realise what Hansie meant to the nation. Not to mention a lot of people across the globe too. It's a shame that in the end he let everyone (including himself) down, but he sure had his glory days!
I don't need to talk to anyone - I watched cricket through the 1990s and never warmed to the guy, irregardless of his match-fixing incidents later on in life.

I think we'll just end on a reminder of Hansie's monobrow.

Mmmm, tasty tasty - I just wanna snuggle up to him all night long. Well, maybe not now...

Cronje looks like an ugly version of Pete Sampras. Now there was a handsome guy...

International Captain
viv richards
imran khan
keith miller
curtley ambrose
shane warne
dennis lillee
ian botham

i think that is a pretty good list.

Austerlitz

U19 Debutant
viv richards
imran khan
keith miller
curtley ambrose
shane warne
dennis lillee
ian botham

i think that is a pretty good list.

U see viv richards walk out to bat and u see the the rest of the charismas[khan, lillee, botham]suddenly become a little tense.
In viv's presence they looked a little less charismatic. But viv always the same.
That's why viv is no 1 for me.
The one king.

Nah G_S, I reckon another IPL is the way to go, but make it a bit longer, this one's been far too short.

Can't wait for the next India v. Sri Lanka ODI series. That'll bring the entertainment

LOL guys. Don't be so touchy. I am neither a fan of umpteen number of India vs SL series, nor of IPL (I hate IPL to the core). Just tell me what Flintoff has done outside of Ashes? And compared to the guys being mentioned in this thread, where Flintoff stands in stakes of Charisma? He hasn't been a great captain, outside of Ashes hasn't had many great heroics, sat on past accolades for so long etc etc.

Pardon me, but English media has a bad habit of hyping up their cricketers. What with Harmison being the next Ambrose. Blah! Pretty much what Indian media does naively is what English media does with consummate sophistry.

I must be the only one who thinks India vs. SL contests are pretty good, if you look past the overdose in recent times. The last two Test series held in SL between the two teams have been among the more entertaining ones in recent years. Heck, I don't understand why Australia and SA don't tour there more often, when their wickets produce matches as exciting as this.

Nah, Flintoff is very charismatic and exciting. Don't think you've watched enough of him if you come to the conclusion "what has he done outside of the Ashes"? He's no ATG, but he's an amazing presence to watch on the field.

His later career was blighted by injury, but he was a big factor in England drawing in India in 2006, that spell to Kallis in Edgbaston 2008, the direct hit runout of Ponting in the fifth Test in Ashes 2009, the fifth day spell at Lord's 2009 against Australia, many moments like that. He was involved in many match or series turning moments.

He failed on way too many fronts to be considered so charismatic. Was an ordinary performer for long periods of time, did not have show signs of making a great leader, did not have great world cup campaigns (though don't know his wc stats back of my hand). Yes, he did have one Botham like Ashes but then even Harbhajan had a dream series against Australia once. Doesn't tick enough boxes for mine. Nowhere near likes of Richards, Imran, Botham, Miller, Warne etc.

And how many guys come close to those you've named? Shall we restrict the quality of "charisma" to 20 ATG cricketers or so if that's your criteria?

Forget about pure performance and numbers for a moment and look at the impact the man had on his teammates and fans. And just wait till GIMH finds this thread.
