Nah, there's more to it than that. As GF has said, O'Neill is an Ulster Catholic just like Lennon and he didn't attract anywhere near this level of hatred in his time at the Hoops.

Obviously what has happened to him is indefensible, but he doesn't make it easy for himself by being an arsewipe generally. If one keeps poking a hornets' nest with a stick one will be stung and should shoulder at least a teeny fraction of the blame.
