Duncan Fletcher Appointed as India Coach

Coaches hardly make much difference imo.
It's not football.
They're useful for taking the players to the ground.

I dunno, it's only as important a role as they make it. The team might not go completely to poo if the coach isn't up to much but a particularly good or bad one can make a big difference.

Strange you say that right now, when all the players in the Indian setup in the past month or so have been going on and on about how much of a difference Gary Kirsten made to the team.
Even Sachin said that he helped him in improving his batting and defining his role.

And before that Greg Chappell clearly affected the team negatively with among other things the Whole Ganguly Fiasco, then dropping Sachin to the middle order in ODI'S and asking Dravid to open in tests.

Apparently Stephen Fleming was first choice but he was not keen on travelling everywhere with the team.

How interested is he in sending down throwdowns?
Is he the kind of person who enjoys the confidence of the players?

Btw, I don't think Andy was right for the role. Seemed to be a tough taskmaster. Wouldn't have gone down well with most of the seniors.

Was keeping my fingers crossed for someone like Fleming or other coaches with a similar personality to Kirsten.

Is a terrible choice for a multitude of reasons. Duncan used to like to throw his weight around in the England camp and by the end of his tenure he was far and away the most powerful person in the England setup. Such an approach, if pursued, is likely to be disastrous for India who have traditionally done best with coaches like Wright and Kirsten who preferred to stay away from the limelight and focus on the coaching.

My personal opinion is that Duncan is the right coach to have when you are building a team from scratch (as England were in 1999) but hes too authoritative for a team thats already well established. Nonetheless, things change over time and Duncan may very well have done the same.

Possible but somehow I doubt it. I know the contract is for two years but I put the over/under at like 7 months.

Completely the wrong personality.

Its been said on TV channels that Gary Kirsten recommended and backed Duncan Fletcher to BCCI for this post.

Like the choice. It is a crucial time for India where a lot of youngsters are coming into the team. I think Fletcher is the perfect fit. Good Luck to him and team India.

I would be surprised if this wasn't discussed quite a while ago with Kirsten, the senior players and perhaps Fletcher himself.

Otherwise, can't see how they could have simultaneously announced the continuation of Eric Simons (a Kirsten pick) as the bowling coach.
