**Official** Sri Lanka in England / Scotland - 2011

Nice to see Welagedara getting among wickets. If of form will easily be the most dangerous SL bowler on tour.

Now Sports minister wants every player in the squad not to miss any tour games. That meay be a premature end of IPL for Dilshan, Sanga, MJ, Perera, Randiv, Kulasekara and perhaps Nuwan Pradeep.

Thanks for the SL administration showing balls, and deciding that no one is above the game. SL players haven't achieved much from IPL performance vise (other than cash and injuries). And the absence of top players from Premier league is hurting us.

It's high time for SLC to claim percentage of players' earnings from IPL. 20% would be a good amount.

Arjuna wanted to do this, think he was aiming for 10%.
tbh, I got no problem with it. SLC invests so much money into the careers of these players starting from U-15 levels, but when they move on and play foreign leagues the domestic standards drop affecting future generations.

What happened to Maharoof? I recall him bowling in Australia and at least keeping things pretty tight.Seems he could be useful in England

He is playing for Lancashire this year ( if his visa application ever gets approved), we couldn't afford a proper overseas player and he wanted the chance to resurrect his career so the reports were hes on a pretty rock bottom contract.

Will be fighting with Newby/Cheetham/2nd Spinner for a spot in the CC side i guess apart from when Jimmeh is available, or deputise for Chapple if the old man is struggling. Should be a fixture in the LO games.

Anyone want to take a guess on the England A side for the game against SL?

Adams
Davies+
Bopara
Hildreth*
Taylor
Patel
Rashid
Woakes
Shazhad
Finn
Onions

Assuming Tremlett & Bresnan are going to be 11th and 12th man in the test squad.

Bopara to 5 in that lineup I reckon. Also Davies batted 4/5 for Surrey in their first game didn't he?

Who you gonna bat 3 then? Bopara batted there last time he played for the Lions. The other option is to leave out Taylor/Patel and play some like Gale there but I think the England camp will be quite keen to get Patel involved again. If you want to drop Davies down the order as well that means you have to leave out both.

Assume yours would be something like

Lyth
Adams
Gale
Hildreth
Bopara
Davies?

I don't want to drop Davies down the order, if he can opener/wants to open then excellent. I know he did it last year but in Surrey's opening game he batted in the middle order. Whether that's down to him or the Surrey management is unknown but it needs considering at the very least.
I'd be half tempted to bat Hildreth at 3, or if Davies isn't opening he could go there I guess. Though it then means finding another opener and bumping somebody from the middle order. I'd just like us to keep Bopara away from 3 personally.

That'd probably be the best way to fit in all the players I want to see in the side. That's a lot of changes from the last Lions game though.

There was always going to be changes from the last Lions match because half the Test peripherals were in the World Cup squad or injured.

Don't see the need for Patel myself. He may have got fitter but he's only looking helpful for the one-day side right now, his FC form hasn't been anything to shout about lately and his bowling isn't necessary when we have a 5-man attack anyway. Would be interesting to see Davies up the order, if he could do that for the Lions it'd be a bonus. Stokes is well worth a look.

Hard to judge where Finn and Bresnan lie in the England set up now. I'd stil have Bresnan in the first XI as a 5th bowler overseas, but that's not relevant to the summer and not the line of thought they're going with. So he won't start the first Test unless Broad is injured, won't play for the lions because he's technically still in the first team, and won't be dropped because he doesn't deserve to be.

£10 to see Scotland v Sri Lanka or £7.50 to see Scotland v Ireland (these are student prices)

Might be tempted to head through to Edinburgh.

Anyone with a beard like he was sporting in the WC is far too self-obsessed to be a proper captain. Must spend an hour on it every morning. So much effort for so very, very little reward.

Seriously, has never really struck one as a thinking sort of cricketer, but with Mahela & Sanga out of the running there's an element of Hobson's choice about it. Place holder til Mathews is ready to step up, IMHO.

Seems to get easily agitated too. Will be interesting to see if that becomes a hindrance.

If Mathews was fit he would have got the captaincy I think.
Dilshan is just a stop-gap captain, and I absolutely hate the idea of it.
Have bad experiences with the Harshan Tillekeratne fiasco in 04.

dilshan is a smart cricketer, you can see it especially in his bowling. but i'm skeptical about his ability strategize in the scale that is required to marshal an entire team in a test match. He might lack the perceptive that is necessary for success at that level.

But the biggest problem I see here is his character. Dilshan is an egotist, this isn't even a secret in Sri Lanka. I don't know if such a person has the temprement to captain Sri Lanka. especially a young Sri lankan team that for the most part hasn't played in England.

The burden of captaincy might also severely inhibit his game. dilshan bats the best when he is instinctual & unrestrained. This element of freedom might go away if has to be 'responsible' for the sake of the team. So there is bit of a loose-loose situation there as well.

All in all i expect this to be a tough tour for SL. most of our guys are very weak against swing bowling and the early English summer is particularly swing friendly. I expect to see alot of slip catches as our guys, in the typical subcontinent style, will play away from the body and get a lot of nicks. I sort of expect Sanga & Samaraweera to do well, as they have compact techniches. Mahela will probably struggle early on but hopefully he'll hit a sublime knock out of nowhere, which seems to be his M.O these days. Malinga will be interesting, as i have never seen him play in conditions like this. Hopefully, he'll do what waqar did in 1996. Hopefully!
