Is it just me or does it feel like Australians at the moment are all playing for their places?

Just the body language and play of players like Clarke, Ponting, White, Dussey (and before the Ashes Mussey) and Hughes all of the appearance of treating every game like their international careers depended on them not getting out. It's like they're afraid of playing shots at the moment for fear of dismissal.

If this actually is the case then it suggests that the dressing room culture at the moment is rather toxic and should be being addressed by the coaches and selectors. Right now it's this lack of strokeplay which has hurt us in all of the games we've lost - from the Ashes to the most recent ODI.

We won the first ODI because Watto (who has no concerns about his place) hit a ton. We won the next ODI because Marsh (who went out trying to prove a point) hit a ton. We won the third because the English didn't make enough runs and then Haddin smacked a quickfire fifty.

It really concerns me that our players might be taking on too much pressure when they go out to bat and getting out because of it.

Shahid Afridi darts them in on purpose. Smith is trying to bowl like a normal leggy but has poor control atm.

Mate there are plenty of ODIs won by one player from either side. England won yesterday because of Trott, really.

It was Watson game one, Marsh game two and combo of a few blokes including Haddin and Dussey game three.

I don't see it as an issue in LO cricket tbh. Were it the case that one bloke was scoring a ton every game and everyone else was failing then I could see your point, but at least there have been different individuals performing when we've been winning.

We batted terribly last night, Watson aside, but really the game was lost with the pathetic bowling from the quicks. Keep in mind we still made 270-odd.

I agree, in short form cricket, games are often won on the back of a stand out performance by one individual - particularly with the bat as the reality is that most guys don't get the opportunity to make a big score in a given game due to the limited number of deliveries they may face.

What gets me with Smith, especially last night, and with a number o younger blokes, is a preoccupation with scoring in a certain zone. I realise it's difficult, but what I think sets the really good to great LO batsmen apart is an ability to score in more than one zone.

Last night saw Smith seemingly preoccupied with staying leg side of the ball and smashing through covers. I'm not being too hard on the kid here, as it was a tough situation tbf, but the good players adapt. If the ball isn't where their primary scoring area is for a given field, they still find a way to hit to different areas. Someone like Bevan or Hussey, sure they'll want to go over cover, but if the ball is full on leg stump they'll have a zone to hit to on the on side. I just think Smith's approach last night was a little one dimensional.
Yeah this. A few of the good English Test batsmen who never cracked ODIs tended to have one or two main scoring areas, hence their struggles. Such as Vaughan.

I don't know if you watched the whole match because Smith bowled the odd decent ball, but every over was full of dirty long hops and full tosses. The ball that got Bell was decent but the other wickets were off bad balls and the amount of full tosses he bowls is amazing, for a international player.

aye watch the whole match and stand in what i said this is the best i've seen him bowl.he got the ball to drift in to the right hander and thats why PK couldn't hit the ball as straight as he intented.Prior was done by the extra bounce so those wickets looked down to some silly batting but they arn't

Why is Bell's spot being questioned? Who would England replace him with? Surely it's between Trott and Collingwood for the last slot in the middle order?
Because he's done nothing since his return to the side to merit his continued inclusion.

Trott meanwhile, in his short ODI career to date has passed 50 in 8 out of the 15 innings he's played. Strike rate is potentially an issue, but he's scored enough runs that he's undroppable just now.

Which makes it between Collingwood and Bell. And Collingwood simply has more credit in the bank, plus some extremely useful bowling which could be vital in the WC.

He really, really wasn't. It was an absolutely filthy long hop.

I think the boy has huge potential, but let's not re-write the game.
