Collingwood is such an ordinary slip fielder. Not sure why they even have him there to be honest, hes great in the covers but just not very good up close.

Beat you to it :p

There seems to be a school of thought that if you're a really good ring fielder you'll be a really good slips fielder. In some cases that's true (Ponting, Hayden) but in many other cases it's not (Clarke, Collingwood and most of all Watson). It really is a unique art, slips fielding.

Collingwood's a decent slip fielder IMO. He's not as awesome there as he is elsewhere but he does the job, usually. Watson seems to be dire there for someone known as having such a good pair of hands.

but they never make use of it these days rite ?
Had a few beers yesterday with Rod Marsh who basically said that Oz are ****ed untill they find either a really fast, high quality quick or a spinner of at least Swann's class

Not rocket science and hard to disagree based on what we've seen for the last couple of years

He is but even there (really, any fielder with his hand-eye coordination will take the vast majority of things) ... obviously he went the wrong way but he was also very much going down to the ball, which can't have helped.

Nice to see someone agrees with me wrt Watson's ****tiness at slip though. I was starting to feel like a broken record there.

Hope that mentality doesnt mean the next McGrath is overlooked. Actually scratch that, I hope you look for really really fast bowlers and pass over the rest.

In terms of raw pace, it may be that Aus have not had so many genuine quicks at one time

I can understand the thinking of why he is there for the spinner but despite Colly’s athleticism he hasn’t got great hands. Plucks the blinders but he has shelled some absolute sitters in the slips to spin and pace.

Symonds was another, he would make screaming catches from the covers on a regular basis. Place him at first slip though, and he would catch like Peter George.

Hmm, not really worth getting up early I guess but nice to see another solid day from England. I hear Ricky had a couple of incidents as well?

Just to add to his appeal, Trent Copeland is actually a particularly good slipper, from what I've seen. An opening bowler who can field in the slips is a pretty rare commodity.

Ponting's strike rate is through the roof. I think he wants to damage England as much as possible here.

Because of his obvious qualities, people tend to forget that McGrath was very sharp and actually made his first mark on test cricket by returning fire against Ambrose and Walsh

Anyway, it comes down to pace AND quality

What are the scores please? I assume England declared their second dig. What for, and how many are we please?

Ponting with a nice pull there.

His judgement of the single has gotten him into a lot of trouble in recent times though.
