He really does IMO*

*if he faces 80 balls
Well, he's not exactly test class, but at the same time he's the first opener since Richardson retired who's still looked fairly competent after 6 months. In fact he actually appears to be getting better the more he plays in international cricket. Strange that.

Has a good mentality and despite all his flaws he knows what he has to do for the team. He'll never get better in technique but works far better within his own limitations than any other NZ opener since Richardson.

Also faces more balls per innings than any opener since Rico. (83.8)

Yeah, I think this is a balanced view. In the grand scheme of things he's still dire by Test standards, but he's doing a job and all evidence suggests he's the best available. Needs to be given some slack.

McIntosh has come back superbly in this test to date. After his pair in the 1st test, coupled with average of 27 (at the time), I was calling for his head if he failed again in this match, so full credit to him. Not only has he displayed plenty of guts, but has played more shots than I gave him credit for.

You've just gotten him out now.

McIntosh was a fluke!;)

What's your take on the performance of our seam attack..,going through each one of them. You had some concerns going into the game...

As a unit, better than I expected (well up to the 9th wicket falling anyways:dry:)

Thought Martin bowled without luck & probably out-bowled Southee despite only getting one wicket. Arnel was economical & bowled with plenty of control, but I can't help think McKay might have been a better option than either him or Southee. Not just because of the left arm variation, but you need 140km + bowlers to make it uncomfortable for the tail.

McKay's extra 5km or pace could have made a difference to that last wicket stand, especially as he can bowl a decent yorker.

What about you?

50 run opening partnership, we don't get too many of those.

Not a chance Martin out bowled Southee, Southee was dire against the last partnership but was easily the pick of the fast bowlers.

Disagree, thought Martin was damn unlucky, at best they were about even. Southee did get a wicket from a strangle down the leg-side & from what I saw Martin appeared to beat the bat more often & was better with the short ball. Thought he was really unlucky not to get Harby 3-4 times late last night.

I should add, I didn't see much of the 1st session today

Southee did have Gambhir dropped when he was on zero tbf though. Getting Gambhir like he did is always a tad fortunate but he should of had him in his first over.

Why does McCullum always play his best knocks when I'm unable to watch?

Cricinfo is no substitute.

Imagine the balance McCullum would give to team in a fantasy world where he could average 35 opening and keep wicket. Franklin could bat eight; so gun. Damn that back.
