Australia went to war so Scott Styris could play test cricket?
Or are you not aware the acronym stands for Australia and New Zealand Army Corps?
I knew exactly what it means. That's why I was questioning it's relevance to Styris.

The ANZAC Cove battle was the first war we've been in that came to mind. I could substitute it for any other war we've been in the unlikely event the Australians are completely outraged by my comment. The point should be pretty clear.

He is set for life because he is playing in NZs second most popular sport. If he had worked hard at his game and perfected the art of archery he would not be set for life. Cricket has given him everything. Cricket will remain as our second most popular sport so long as the players do well and we have a successful national side. The number of kids playing the game are dropping away this year because according to the Dominion post our national side is not performing. Styris could be helping with that performance and with the health of the game.
No one is bagging him. I just don't understand his reasoning and will buy his book when it comes out to read the full explanation of why he doesn't play. If he can play 4 day cricket he can play 5 day cricket IMHO.
All this said - I realise we should be happy that at least he plays ODIs and make the most of his talents in that format. We badly missed him against Bangers...
I will repeat something that I have said many times. NZ does not have many international calibre players we should try to nurture their careers so that they play until they are 38 or so - none of this retiring when they are 30 years old like MacMillan.

Read an article recently in the Herald that our player numbers are higher than ever, and I'm going to trust Leggatt, Cleaver and co. over a sports section run by Milmow tbh.
And I don't see why the bigger bucks in cricket means it has given him everything. If anything it indicates there's more competition, and the big bucks don't discount the work he's put in.
I'd love to see Styris back playing tests, but I have no right to tell him to do so. At the end of the day it's his decision to make, and it's NZC's duty to keep the Black Caps full of good players, not Scott Styris's.
Relax Matt. I made a joke about ANZAC and only your fellow mod Prince EWS got the joke. Flem got all uppity about the meaning.
I posted Styris stats, which I made the effort to look up, in a discussion on a cricket board. I cannot understand all the browbeating about him, because as the stats clearly show, he is no world superstar.

This sounds like it is a WIIFM world - what is in it for me - maybe there isn't a lot in it for Styris to play test cricket anymore - and he can take a 'its not my problem' attitude. Or he can pitch in and help. Or at least do better radio interviews.
If I havn't made it clear already - only part of me thinks this. The other part of me is happy that at least he is still involved with ODI cricket as he may have a very good reason for not playing tests such as stress. But I do think he should have a good reason. Because his country could use him. If Kane Williamson decides to become a 20/20 specialist and play in the IPL exclusively I will make similar comments about him. If Vettori chooses to sit out a tour so that he can go and make $$ playing in the IPL I will also be dissapointed.
If we were in Australia with a wealth of players this would not be an issue.

My bad, didn't see only a part of you thought it. It's understandable to be frustrated, but imo it's NZCs responsibility to maintain the health of the game, and that includes reducing the player drains.
If Vettori suddenly decided to go play IPL I'd be a bit mad tbh. He's the captain, selector and shares the coaching role. Would be a prize **** to leave NZC in the lurch like that.
If Williamson did it I'd be extremely disappointed but in his case there would be repercussions, namely he would be on an unofficial NZ blacklist for selection (if I was in charge) because he couldn't be trusted to stick around with the side for a decent period of time.
I do think Scotty 2 Hotty suffered for his early retirement somewhat, because we had that run of players in hot form and he was the one to miss out.

I appreciate and agree Flem that he needs to show more in terms of performances. The odd real performance of potential is not enough, and now at 25, potential has to be transformed into substance. So using that rationale, he probably doesn't necessarily deserve to be included in the NZ squad until he demonstrates the essential consistency at domestic level. I just hope he sneaks into the squad, and it clicks for him.
Personally TT, I think his reputation is based around something more solid than a smack in the mouth off Jimmy Anderson. Like Flem said he does need to produce more of what he's shown in glimpses before, and perhaps this tour may be a good chance for him to start doing so.
