I read somewhere they earn $1.50 an hour (IIRC), either that, it's $1.50 per day.
The menial intensive labour rate for adult wage-labourers itself is about Rs 60 a day, Reckon' It'd be half for children.

So Yeah, 70 c to 1 dollar a day max.

Thanks for that :)

Is this weekend work, or are they doing it and not going to school full stop?

Is 60-65rs a 'lot' of money or not? Could you actually buy anything with that sort of money?
No unfortunately it isn't. If I remember correctly from when I was there on holidays earlier in the year, a box of Corn Flakes costs around 150rs and bread is around 15-20rs depending on type so it would be very difficult to live off of 60-65rs a day.
Bread that the middle class-higher middle class uses is priced at Rs. 20-30, but the bread/biscuits the indigents buy is from cheap roadside cigarette stalls, costing about 3-5 rupees. However, The bread is stored in the open usually surrounded by mosquitoes and is always stale.

These families can barely eke out a living even if they make their 8-year old sons/daughters work and an extremely unhygienic and malnutrition-ed one at that.

I highly doubt they're even considering living off cornflakes  Why didn't you mention the price of caviar too?

That was exactly my point. I was merely giving Craig a comparison that he could relate to as Corn Flakes is a really basic food here in Australia. He didn't have an idea of what 60-65rs meant in terms of buying everyday things.

I was trying to illustrate that in India most people can't even afford a box of Corn Flakes and it is definitely seen as a luxury item whereas in Australia it's considered one of the basic, everyday foods.

That is just a silly statement. It is a basic everyday food in Australia because you don't have the option, either you (not you personally) have the cornflakes or leave house without breakfast. Corn flakes is not a luxury item, it may be expensive but who cares about a ******* box of cornflakes when the alternative is much much much much much...infinity better aka food prepared by the mum.

India is poverty stricken but not to an extent where most of the population can't buy a box of cornflakes -.-

Considering a huge proportion of the population is poverty stricken and many are below the poverty line and earn less than 60 Rs a day, a box of corn flakes that costs around 150 Rs would be pretty hard to afford.

By the way all you angry people missing the point, I was merely trying to give Craig a relative understanding of how much 60-65rs actually is.

He asked a question about whether it was a lot of money, I said it wasn't and gave him an illustration of how difficult it is to live off of 60-65 Rs when something like bread costs 20 Rs and Cereal costs 150 Rs.

I don't give a rats ass on what people in India for breakfast and I don't care in the slightest. I was trying to illustrate that if Craig was earning 60-65 Rs a day, it would be tough for him to even buy neccessities over there.

I sympathize with the (unrelated) rant about corn flakes though, hate the muck.

I tend to classify them all under the general heading "cereal". They're terrible.

Hate the concept of the commonwealth for starters. Couldn't give a flying **** about the games if I wanted to. the Oz cricket tour will over shadow the games anyway.
