ODI all-time XI's for each nation

G.I.Joe

Thread comes off thinking about whether Agarkar would make India's all time ODI XI, tbh. (Not that it's an original idea for a thread :p)

India all time XI:

Sachin Tendulkar
Saurav Ganguly
Md Azharuddin/NS Sidhu
Virender Sehwag
Yuvraj Singh
Rahul Dravid
MS Dhoni +
Kapil Dev
Manoj Prabhakar
Zaheer Khan/Javagal Srinath
Anil Kumble/Harbhajan Singh
-------------------------------
Ravindra Jadeja (lol)

The batting is really really strong, tbh.

No doubt someone will come up with a better England side than mine but here goes:

Marcus Trescothick
Nick Knight
Robin Smith
Graham Thorpe
Neil Fairbrother
Andrew Flintoff
Ian Botham
Alan Knott (+)
Graeme Swann (? He's not played for very long as an ODI Regular, but I can't think of anyone better suited - Underwood possibly?)
Darren Gough
Bob Willis (C)

It's made a bit more difficult picking an England side simply because they've played so many fewer one-day internationals than any other international side. Still, hopefully I've picked a pretty good side, although I suspect it would still lose to may of the other all-time XIs

Inclusion of Azhar should be deadset tbh. One of the greatest ODI Batsmen ever, held the highest runs record for a long amount of time and was an expert in batting with the tail.

It's surprisingly difficult to find the right balance, we really haven't produced many world class bowlers. James Anderson is our 2nd leading wicket taker in history, with Stuart Broad in the Top 5, just shows how little ODi cricket we played in the early days. Flintoff could possibly be down at 7, but his best days with the bat came at 5, and Fairbrother and Morgan make up a pretty fantastic lower-middle order. Five very good bowlers too. It's not a match for a few of the other All-Time XI's, but it's decent enough.

I guess Mathews is a bit of a questionable choice considering he hasn't played much. Atapattu a bit unlucky to miss out. Also Arnold wasn't too bad in this format I'd say.

This team, and these comments.

But it's hard, very hard, to leave out Gooch, Thorpe, Knight and Robin "167no" Smith.

On second thoughts:

I simply can't leave out Gooch and I'd want him to open with Trescothick for the sheer brutality of it. Neil Harvey gets the chop on the grounds that he's so similar to Eoiaiaiioin but not quite as good.

I have also decided to drop Hick for Smith. Very tough but that 167no is impossible to ignore. On the other hand, Hick's batting in ODIs could be murderous and his fielding (whether in the slips or with his monstrous arm from the deep) counts for a lot, and my one worry about this team is its fielding ability.

Anyhow, the Judge has it, so here goes:

Gooch
Trescothick
Stewart +
Pietersen
Smith
Flintoff
Morgan
Botham
Swann
Gough
Willis

7)Ajay Jadeja / Manoj Prabhakar
8)Kapil Dev
9)Harbhajan Singh
10)Zaheer Khan
11)Javagal Srinath

That would be my ODI line up. I would replace Sehwag over Ganguly if Sehwag keeps going the way he is nowadays. The # 7 spot can go either way. If you want a batting heavy line up then Jadeja could fill in and if you want to play 5 bowlers then Prabhakar gets the nod (although he will be batting lower than Kapil obviously).

With Hick & Bevan it'd be interesting to see how they'd get on with the current law on bouncers in one-dayers. Think both possibly benefited from the law in their own era.

I was never fully convinced by Stewie as on ODI player either, but buggered if I can think of a better candidate for the gauntlets.

Hussey would have to be in there, surely. Bloke averages over 50 over a pretty long time-frame, and is equally capable of playing through to the end or scoring very quickly depending on the circumstance.

Also not sure of the need for Senior Waugh, not a great record with the bat IMO and with five genuine bowlers the need for his seamers is pretty low. There are several better one-day batsmen who could be picked in his place for mine.

Anyway, after all the criticism here's my side:

Adam Gilchrist (+)
Mark Waugh
Ricky Ponting (C)
Dean Jones
Michael Bevan
Michael Hussey
Shane Watson
Brett Lee
Shane Warne
Craig McDermott
Glenn McGrath

Fantastic batting down to No.7, four top-class bowlers, a good fifth bowler option with Watson (plus Junior Waugh if desperate) and some terrific fielding = a damn good side.

Ah, I knew I forgot someone.
:)

Also, after posting that playing XI, I realised that I've left out Greg Chappell and Hussey...Australia has produced some awesome ODI batsmen over the years...I am tempted to leave out both the Waugh brothers for these two, but then who'll open with Gilchrist (if not Mark)? and who'll be my fifth bowler (if not the Waugh brothers)?

Edit: dropped Symonds and Steve for Greg and Hussey, on second thought.

The 5th bowler is slightly cobbled together but Symonds, Bevan, Waugh, Hussey and even the Chimp should each be capable of getting through a few respectable overs.

Not sure that Lee really belongs in this company but his pace lends an extra dimension to the attack and there's no obvious alternative.
