*Official* Road to the 2010/11 Ashes

A further note is the lack of Rashid in the Performance Squad, which does surprise me. After a very good season, with both bat and ball, expected him to at least get a place here. Cannot understand that decision.

Bopara is another I expected to be named here, but maybe it was decided competitive first-class cricket in South Africa was a better option should he be needed in the full squad.

Apart form those issues, there seems an excellent mix within the squad for a development side. Players that have excelled this season, players on the fringe of the squad, and young promising players to learn more about the game.

England in safe selection shocker.

I guess with their main blokes in good form, they didn't feel the need to take any risks, just have like-for-like back-up. Fair enough, looks a good squad. Quite like the combo of Anderson/Broad/Finn/Swann. If they get an early win in the series, they'll be tough to stop and the back-up is experienced. Agree with Woodster, Shazhad's ability to reverse the ball is a bit of a non-event in this country.

The selection of the performance squad is a bit surprising. Some very conservative options there.

Just better hope Swann doesn't get injured, a tail of Anderson, Finn and Panesar does not make for good reading.
Will get a broken finger first batting innings of the tour.

God I hope we win. Be unbearable from the likes of Corrin if we don't.

Not that England stand a chance mind. Roll on summer and 40 degree heat. I've bought up all the Murray Mints in Australia - your lot are toast.

For as long as I can remember NSW have always had a scarily good team: one which would be very competitive in Test cricket. So no change there then.

I knew you'd do that, so I bought more than a tour's supply months ago. I'm going to trade them to Andrew Strauss for a plane ticket.

The 16 selected is exactly the 16 I went with this morning after thinking long and hard about which group of players I want there representing us.

Of course 13 of those places were already pretty guaranteed, it just came down to Swanny's back-up and which two of Bresnan, Shahzad and Tremlett would make the trip.

Firstly the seamers, I thought Bresnan would make it and it would come between Shahzad and Tremlett. Bresnan is a solid, if largely unspectacular, performer. He may be relied upon to get 2-70 off 25 overs, with the other two, on their day, more capable of influencing a game with a five-wicket haul. It is on the off days where judgement can be made, Bresnan's figures probably won't be too much different, but Shahzad and Tremlett may only get through 10 overs at over five an over, in a four-man attack you cannot afford to have the Aussies tucking into a man and leaving Strauss with a three-man attack and part-timers.

Bresnan is a safe choice, but which made me think it was a straight shoot-out between Tremlett and Shahzad. Both going would be a gamble, with limited international experience between them. My reason for wanting Tremlett was his natural abilities, to hit the deck, get extra bounce, all at good pace. His 2nd division wickets may mean less, but so long as he showed he was in decent rhythm, and took wickets along the way, the standard was perhaps less important as the management believe he has the attributes to be a success in Test matches.

Shahzad is still somewhat of an unknown. Yes he can bowl decent pace, and much has been made of his reverse swing, will he achieve that with the Kookaburra ball ? Probably to a lesser extent. I think Tremlett is more suited to the Aussie wickets, while Shahzad's development will be enhanced with the back-up squad.

If Adil Rashid was in any of the selectors plans to go to Australia this winter, I would've expected he'd have gone to Bangladesh to earn his stripes, although that was no guarantee to win a place this winter, as Tredwell will testify. They're taking it carefully with Rashid, a debut in Australia would not be ideal, we know Ponting, Clarke and Hussey will be positive against spin, Rashid again would respresent a gamble. The safe option is Panesar, has played in two Ashes series, one in Australia, has rekindled a bit of form this season, and again is a more reliable option.

I think England have been pragmatic in selecting this squad, it may not be construde as exciting, but the decisions they've made, in my opinion, all make some sense, and as back-up players, both their characters and performances can generally be relied upon, if not to win a Test match, they will not let the side down.
I agree with all this, Tremlett, I have a feeling if given a chance, he will go really well down in Oz and too be honest at this moment in his career, I think he has more attributes than Finn.Like many on here I suspect and hope Finn will make a bit of a name for himself come the Ashes and he will if he can keep his line and length correct, which his usually one of his strong points. But there were times this summer, when he started to lose it and became very easy to score off.As far as Bresnan,I think England liked what he did down in Bangladesh,as far as kept running in all day and looked the fittest bowler out there and didn't stray in line and length too much.He is obviously the safe option and to be honest we've only seen a few overs of Shahzad, even though he looked pretty decent there are still too many unknowns, not least his fitness. Gough seemed to have a bit of a downer about Shahzad ,saying he doesn't reverse swing the ball,he uses conventional swing,so that might be a factor. All the players down there, will get their chance to shine and push for a place,if they perform in some games for the performance squad and really look the part, you never know who may get injured or not perform out there .

And yeah let's face it, the ability of the playing group to be fit on a long tour is almost as important as whether they're firing, especially on largely benign Aussie decks. Nothing deflates a touring side's morale quite like a few injuries.

Cant help but feel that England missed a trick by not giving Shahzad a go against the Pakistanis this summer. Its hard to advocate his selection when so little is known about him. We know what Bresnan is going to bring to the party, though quite frankly his style of bowling is hardly conducive to the wickets down under either.

Read through Eng's squad and my first reaction was that there is no chance that that group of bowlers would cause Oz any problems whatsoever

Then I remebered it was 2010 not 2000 and our batsmen have sucked for the last 2 years

Hmm, wouldn't mind seeing Tremlett in the side instead of Finn come day 1, hope he goes well in the warmups. Unleash Finn later in the series
